TEACHING APPROACHES IN SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES


Assignment:
1. Define the ff. concepts:

a. STRATEGY – As for me, strategy is the act of applying different plans or


methods in order to achieve your desired goals. In terms of teaching, teachers
use different strategies to create a creative and meaningful learning journey
for their students.

b. APPROACH – This is the way people speak/spoke to someone. In the field of


teaching, this is one of the important aspects because this is how the students
get their first impression of their teachers. Especially nowadays, where most
of the students are very observant inside the classroom, we better show them
a kind of approach that will make them more comfortable.

c. TECHNIQUE – It is a new method of doing a certain task or activity. As a


teacher, exerting different teaching techniques makes our student loves the
subject we taught. It can be done in a manner of using technologies such as
video clips, news, websites, and even clip art.

d. METHOD – It is a systematic process where the information and lessons are


arranged in a very organized manner. In teaching, we can see this through a
lesson plan whereas the flow of each lesson was presented in order to achieve
the desired objectives.

e. TEACHING – It is the process of exchanging information, where the teachers


are exerting and disseminating all the lessons in a verbal way. It helps the
learners to acquire, adapt, and apply new knowledge. Through teaching,
teachers are being able to know what the needs of our students are.
2. What is Social Studies? Social Science?
Social Studies is the study of social relationships and at the same time the study
of multiple fields such as history, geography, economics, science and technology,
anthropology, psychology, and political science. While Social Science is a group
discipline that studies society and the way people behave and influence the world
around us, in other words, it focuses more on human society.

3. What are the characteristics of a Social Studies teacher’s exemplar?


They are knowledgeable about the subject to be taught because social studies are
not easy as we think, critical thinking and deep understanding are some of the
passageways to exert the disciplines creatively. Second is they have the skills and
techniques that would make their students love the subject of social studies more.
It’s because the learnings of your students always reflect on what kind of teacher
you are to them.

4. What are the goals of Social Studies?


CIVIC COMPETENCE - Social studies educates students on citizenship, providing
them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will help them to become
competent and responsible citizens who are informed, thoughtful, participate in
their community and exhibit moral and civic virtues. The second is to have a
SOCIAL UNDERSTANDING, which allows the students to define and study the
relation of each existing agent in the society. Last is to MAKE A SOLUTION.

a. HISTORY – one of the disciplines which studies about the past events.
b. SOCIOLOGY – it is the study of human relationships and institutions.
c. ECONOMICS – the branch of social studies which is concerned with the
production and consumption
d. ANTHROPOLOGY – it is the study of human/human behavior.
e. ARCHEOLOGY – it is the study of ancient humans through fossils and artifacts.
f. PSYCHOLOGY – it is the scientific study of the human mind and its behavior.
g. GEOGRAPHY – the study of the earth’s physical features, it also includes the
distribution of the human population and as well as its resources.
h. POLITICAL SCIENCE – it focuses on the theory or practice of politics on
government.
