Exercise Irving Berlin’s Checklist :

• Take a current song of yours and answer the questions on the
checklist and see how it measures up
• See what areas of structure your writing could use more attention

The Objective:
• To see whether the songs you are writing currently are implementing
sound structure
• To bring attention to and address what areas of your commercial
songwriting could use some extra work

Structure Re-Writing:
• Re-write a current song to fit into a more commercial structure
• Take a current song of yours and count bars and see if you can edit
the song to fall into a more commercial structure.

The Objective:
• To implement some of the basic structure tools given in this exercise
• To make sure your sections have an even, symmetrical, easy to
follow and retain structure.
