With a particular emphasis on academic research and speaking, English for Academic Purposes II recycles and builds on the skills of academic writing,
critical analysis and organization that were introduced in the pre-requisite course English for Academic Purposes I. The course introduces the key concepts
of reliable academic research and information literacy, exposes students to authentic academic materials in written, oral and visual formats, and thereby has

the ultimate aim of helping learners become more autonomous and resourceful in their academic studies. Classwork of ENGL 102 involves close reading
and analysis of the source texts, followed by class discussions, which requires deep understanding and evaluation of and reaction to the materials. Students
are also expected to use library resources and online databases to find reliable sources, critically evaluate these materials to formulate their own arguments
and produce intellectually mature and thorough essays and oral performances. Compared to ENGL 101, in ENGL 102, students will have more
opportunities for speaking tasks such as debates and discussions that require higher order thinking skills, which will not only prepare them for the sequel
course, ENGL 211 Academic Speaking Skills, but also for their later studies.

The overall aim of this course is to develop students’ academic research, writing and speaking skills through reading and listening, which serve as input for
AIM writing and speaking.

WRITING READING

Writing: - Rough drafts must be written in class. If a student is absent on those days, they will not be allowed to write the draft afterwards unless they have a
valid excuse (medical report, excused absence, etc.). Not attending the writing sessions will result in receiving 0 (zero) for that assignment. - Turnitin
submission is required for the writing assignments. The instructors will create a Turnitin assignment on Odtuclass for the students to upload their writing. - If
a student fails to upload their assignment to turnitin.com, it will not be graded. The student will receive 0 (zero) for the assignment.

All writing tasks must be written within the time period specified by your instructor. If you do not submit your work on time or during the late submission
period, you will not be allowed to write it afterwards unless you have an official medical report. Not submitting the written task during the allocated time will
result in receiving 0 (zero) for that assignment.

If you are absent in a graded speaking task, you will receive 0 (zero) and will not be given a make-up unless you have an official medical report.
In case of any objection to a grade given by the course instructor, students should talk to their instructors first. If they are not satisfied with the result, they
should submit a petition to Modern Languages Program Coordinator within five days after the grades are announced.

REMINDERS Academic Misconduct: It is the responsibility of students to avoid unethical practices. Students who engage in unethical practices; who cheat in
examinations, essays, or any other assessable work; and who conspire with others to procure such a result will become subject to disciplinary procedures
and/or you will be penalized based on MLP Plagiarism Policy. For METU NCC MLP Plagiarism Policy document please refer to ODTUClass ALL Sections.
Modern Languages Program administration and instructors reserve the right to further question students on the content of the responses submitted for
assignments and exams in order to verify that the work they have submitted is their own.  

Late Submission Policy: If you fail to submit your assignments on the due date, you will be able to submit it in "The Late Submission Period" in return for a
deduction of 20% of the points allocated to that assignment. "The Late Submission Period" ends in 2 days starting from the due date. If you fail to submit
your task within "The Late Submission Period", your score for that assignment will be 0.
Attendance Policy: You are allowed 12 hours of absence. You will get an NA grade if you exceed this limit. It is your own responsibility to catch up to the
class and to make up for any work done during your absence. Missing the class does not excuse you from not turning in assignments. All students are

Essay (35 pts): Essay Outline (10 pts), First Draft (5 pts), and Final Draft (20 pts). You will be informed about each task’s specifications and grading criteria
when the task is set.
Speaking Tasks (20 pts): 10 pts. each. You will be informed about the task specifications and grading criteria when the task is set.
Participation (15 pts): This component carries 15% of the total grading and instructors have several options concerning how to break up the 15 points as
well as whether to give tasks or actual quizzes. 
Midterm (20 pts.): Face-to-face exam. You will be informed about the task specifications and grading criteria when the task is set.
End-of-course Interview (10 pts): The common final assessment for the ENGL 102 course will be an interview. Interview questions will be on the course
content, as well as your personal progress throughout the course. You will not be given a make-up for the final exam unless you have an official medical
report.
