BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Senior High School students must be certain of the job path they chose during this time in

order to prepare for future worthwhile careers. One of the most significant and crucial decisions

that any student must make is selecting the ideal career that will fit. This can indicate whether a

person has the potential to be successful in the future. Self-realization is crucial in our age; the first

step is to try out, then pick the proper path. Students struggle in deciding a course in college that

will help attain a career of their choice. The K-12 system allows them to determine their strand

which is aligned to the course that they will be taking in the future. While making a decision, plenty

of factors can be considered, one of it are the influence of their parents. Regardless of gender or

race, parents' influence on their children's profession choice is continuously crucial. Parents'

expectations and opinions of their children's vocational fit have been found to play the most

important roles in determining their career choices, even if schools, classmates, and the student's

community all have an impact on the young adult's self-identity and career decision. (Ferry, 2006).

About half of student parents said in a research from the University of North Carolina at

Chapel Hill (Taylor, Harris, & Taylor, 2004) that they thought they should be neutral in regard to

their child's career development. However numerous research demonstrate that parents have a

bigger impact on job choice than teachers (Kniveton, 2004), and they can even choose what major

their kids choose to study in college (Simpson, 2003). It is evident that parents feel they have less

control over their children's job decisions than they once had than what the evidence indicates.

This perception appears to be different from children's perceptions, who frequently indicate that

their parents have the most effect (Ferry, 2006; Kniveton, 2004). Due of this perception gap, it's

crucial to look at the outcome of parent involvement.

According to research, parents contacts (Lavine, 1982), involvement in schooling (Simpson,

2003), and gender expectations are the most common ways that parental norms and values have an
impact on children's professional goals (Jacobs, Chhin & Bleeker, 2006; Hesse-Biber & Carter,

2000). Parents' influence is typically exercised through normative channels, such as their interest in

schoolwork and goals for educational success, even though they may believe that other factors,

such as career or education, are the most important ones (Simpson, 2003).

Choosing and deciding on something have consequences. The result of what you have can

either help you or it will hinder and have a negative side in your future. It is also the same with the

course that you will consider. In choosing a strand, there are a lot of factors that the student must

consider (Benitez et al., 2017). Knowing and pursuing one's area of interest will encourage and

assist in finding the proper career path, as these elements are essential for finding a future job that

is suitable for the individual (Malaguial* et al., 2022).

The researchers conducted this study to be able to determine the influence of the parents

on choosing the strand choice of the Grade 11 students in St. Anthony’s College.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The objective of this study is to determine the extent of parental influence on the strand

choice of the Grade 11 students in St. Anthony’s College. Specifically, this study aims to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the extent of parental influence in the strand choice of Grade 11 students when taken

as a whole and when classified according to sex, strand, and parents’ highest educational

attainment?

HYPOTHESIS
There is no extent of parental influence in the strand choice of Grade 11 students when

taken as a whole and when classified according to sex, strand, and parents’ highest educational

attainment.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The conceptual framework of the study below shows the relationship of parental influence

and the strand choice of the students. The independent variable contains the factor that affects the

strand choice of the students. The dependent variable contains the respondents as shown on the

Figure 1.

choice of the students.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Students. The result of the study will provide the students new accumulated knowledge

and their individual ideas about the parental influence of their parents in their strand choice.
Parents. The given data will give parents enough knowledge on the extent of their influence

to the strand choice of the students which will give them understanding on how their influence

affect with the strand choice of their student.

Faculty. The faculties will be able to know the factors that affects how their students

chooses a strand. Furthermore, they can guide their students to their future career.

Community. The given data would give knowledge to the community about the extent of

parental influence on the strand choice of the students. The community would be able to

understand the importance of the influence affecting the strand choice of the students.

Future Researcher. The study will serve as guide for their future studies related to the

parental influence on the strand choice of the students.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

This study will aim to determine the extent of parental influence in the strand choice of

Grade 11 students when taken as a whole and when classified according to sex, strand, and parents'

highest educational attainment. This study will be limited to the Grade 11 students of St. Anthony's

College. It will be held within the St. Anthony's College institution. The researchers will use a

questionnaire to obtain data and information from their respective respondents. The Grade 11

students will be used as respondents and will be subjected for answering the questionnaire which

will be used for the quantitative research.
