SITUATION ANALYSIS

Mission

Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization that builds freshwater wells to

provide communities affected by the global water crisis with safe, clean
drinking water. Waterborne diseases cause more preventable young deaths
than HIV, Malaria and world violence combined. Outside of general health
and sanitation impacts, the water crisis also affects food security and
education. Communities without clean water cannot support agriculture
and therefore suffer from food insecurity. Children in these communities
spend 6-8 hours a day walking to retrieve water, the time a child usually
spends in school. A main focal point of Thirst Project is improving clean
water access in the Kingdom of eSwatini. The country has the highest
density population of HIV and Aids in the world. Clean water is essential in
the treatment and containment of HIV/AIDS in eSwatini. Communities who
receive clean water are also taught proper sanitation, disposal and hand
hygiene procedures. Proper hand hygiene and sanitation measures can help
reduce waterborne illnesses drastically. *Data sourced from the UN and
Thirst Project

Donors

Thirst Project operates under a Board of Governors who cover administrative

costs so 100% of public donations go toward freshwater well projects. Those
who fully fund a minimum of one well can join Thirst Project staff on a
documenting trip. These individuals will visit the villages and communities
their donations are funding. To attend these trips, the donor must
provide/fundraise their travel costs.

SITUATION ANALYSIS
Gen Z Driven
Powered by young adults, Thirst Project contacts middle schools, high
schools and colleges and helps them start their own fundraiser. To date,
Thirst Project has worked with over 2,500,000 students on 1,100 campuses
in the United states. Established in 2020, the Kent State University Thirst
Project Club has raised a total of $2,742. The club has held several virtual
fundraising strategies including bingo cards and fundraising Fridays.

Competition

Compared to other water organizations, Thirst Project is the only group

catered exclusively towards young adults like college students. Ripple is a
competitor of Thirst Project that takes an e-commerce approach to ending
the water crisis. They sell water bottles through an e-commerce platform on
their for-profit company, then direct funds to their nonprofit branch.
Founded in North Canton, Ripple may compete with Thirst Project for
donations and share of voice in northeast Ohio *Sourced from Ripple.

Partners
In addition to community donors acquired by young people, Thirst Project
has several partners. These include Kiwanis, Selfless by Hyram, Liquid Death,
Morton Salt, Lionsgate, among many others.

Current Goal
Thirst Project has set a goal for universal access to clean water by 2025, but
they don’t plan to stop there. If universal water and sanitation is achieved,
the global disease burden can be reduced by 10%.

2020

What's Pandemic Influence

the issue? COVID-19 had a great impact

on the ability to build new
wells. To meet the 2025 goal,
we need to make up for lost
time .

69%

In 2019
Only 69% of the Kingdom
of eSwatini have access
to clean, safe drinking
water according to
UNICEF.

100%

By 2025
Thirst Project is working
towards 100% access to
clean, safe drinking water in
eSwatini by 2025. Exercise for
eSwatini can help achieve
that goal.

EVENT OVERVIEW

Sponsored students and bystanders will arrive at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April
26, 2024, for the Exercise for eSwatini event. Participants will first sign in at
the registration table, then fill out a liability waiver. From there, they will be
directed to the lawn to set up for the 20 min. workout. A student
ambassador will lead the participants through a series of exercises using
weights equating to the average jerry can (44 lbs.) used to carry water back
and forth in eSwatini. The goal of the workout is to provide an immersive
experience, but the weight is only suggested. We want participants to
experience the physical challenges children face when retrieving water, not
to become discouraged by their own physical capabilities.

| 8 |
EVENT OVERVIEW

At 1:30 p.m. all participants will begin

a 3.75 mi. walk around campus. Facts
about the water crisis will be written
on 4x6 vinyl banners and placed
along the designated trail. These will
include quotes like, “Every 21 seconds
a young death could be prevented
with access to safe, clean water," to
start the conversation among
participants. They will also act as
mile-markers.

I have created two routes, one through downtown Kent, while the other runs
only through campus. While the downtown route would attract more
attention in the community, the campus route wouldn’t require Kent police
to shut down the roads. The entire route should take 40-70 min. to
complete, depending on the participant’s pace

EVENT OVERVIEW

Along the route, there will be hydration stations and designated bystander
watch points. Participants will cross the finish line outside of the Kent State
student center. They will be greeted by bystanders and refreshments.

I would like to partner with Haymaker

Farmers’ Market for refreshments and
provide appetizers that highlight in-season
produce. The market is frequently involved
with the university, and they have a strong
understanding of agriculture. The water
crisis affects eSwatini’s agriculture industry.
Knowing this, Kent’s local farms may be
interested in helping other farmers in need.
If we cannot form this partnership, we will
use university catering for $200. I would love
to have refreshing fruits and vegetables,
along with handheld snack food like trail
mix, hummus and pita chips, and
sandwiches.

During refreshments, we will have thirst project resources available.

Volunteers will mingle with participants and help them sign up for Kent
State Thirst Project Club. At several tables, participants and bystanders can
find out where their donation is going and what else they can do to help.
