Land Transportation
Land transportation is still described as the most common mode of short-distance travel and is known to
have the most percentage od the overall movement of tourism. It is significant not only because it
brings passenger from its point of origin to its destination, but also because it provides tourists a
convenient way to explore the beauty of the destination which greatly contribute to the tourist
experience.
Land Transportation
Dileep (2019) showed in the figure above the various land transport services in tourism. Evidently road
transfer offers diverse choices, ranging from scheduled to more specialized transport and others. On the
other hand, rail transport, as one of the mass transport providers, does not only service general
passenger but it also offers services to tourist seeking a more comfortable, luxurious and extraordinary
travel experience.

The following are the chronological development in land transportation from the 17 th century up to
the 20th century.
17th Century Blaise Pascal recognized the need for passenger transport as the
majority of the population could not afford their carriages. He
invented the first vehicle that resembled a bus in a form of horse-
drawn capable of carrying eight passengers.
1662 Pasca, together with Marquis de Crenan and Duke de Roannez,
founded a transport company utilizing seven carriages. They had a
regular service around Paris
End of 17th century Similar horse-drawn coach transport was being utilized in Paris,
London and Berlin
1826 First coach line was founded in Nates, France
1827 USA followed, and it was operated by Abraham Brower along
Broadway in New York
1828 General des Voitures dites was founded by Baundry and its operation
was within Paris
1886 Karl Benz introduced the gasoline-powered automobile in Mannheim
Germany
1898 It was when the first motorized omnibus was used for tourism
19th century Europe and North America utilized motorized buses
20th century Technologically advanced automobile was introduced in the market

leisure travel to tourists.

Coach is a common term used in tourism that refers to a “bus” a huge vehicle that could carry
about 20 passengers.

In the Philippines, policies were set to regulate land transportation and promote harmony among all
stakeholders of land transportation.
RA 4136 also known as “Land Transportation and Traffic Code of the Philippines” this is an act to
compile the laws related to land transportation and traffic rules, creation of a land transportation
commission and for other purposes.
1. LTO this government agency is incharge with promoting the safety and comfort of public
travelers with regard to motor vehicle.

2. LTFRB. The main purpose of this agency is focused on simplifying the land transportation
industry franchising system. Part of its task is to certify that safety and operating standards are
observed by commercial and private vehicles.
