7TH GRADE, ALGEBRA.

LINEAR FUNCTION

TASKS:
- to familiarize yourself with the definition of a linear function and develop
knowledge of the graph and properties of a linear function;
- develop the primary skills of creating and reading a graph of a linear function.

THEORETICAL BLOCK

1. Work through the material in the textbook you are studying.

2. Learn the basic theoretical information on the topic "Linear function.
 What is a function?
 Define a linear function.
 What is the graph of a linear function?
 Is it true that every line on the coordinate plane is a graph of a linear function?
 How to graph a linear function?
 Give examples of an increasing linear function.

Linear function and its graph

1. A linear function is a function that can be defined by the formula of the form y =
kx + b, where x is the argument, k and b are the given numbers.

If, in particular, k=0, we get a constant function y=b;

If b=0, then we get the direct proportionality y=kx.

Example: y = 2x + 2 (k = 3; b = 2) y = 2x - 3 (k = 2; b = -3)

1 1
y = - x + 5 (k = -1; b = 5) y = 2 x (k = 2 ; b = 0) y = 3 (k = 0; b = 3)

2. Properties of a linear function

1) The scope of the definition is all numbers (R).

2) The range of values is all numbers (R).

−b b
3) If y = kx + b, k>0, then y>0 at x > k ; y <0 at x ← k ; the function is increasing over
the entire domain of definition.
b −b
4) If y = kx + b, k<0, then y>0 at x ← k ; y <0 at x > k ; the function decreases over the
entire domain of definition.

3. The graph of a linear function is a straight line.

To create a graph, we look for the coordinates of any two points on the graph.

Every line on the coordinate plane that is not perpendicular to the abscissa is a graph of a
linear function.

Example. Graph the function y = x - 1.

The function is linear, so the graph is a straight line.

у -1 1

4. Properties of the graph of a linear function

1) If k > 0, then the graph forms an acute angle with the positive y-axis.

2) If k < 0, then the graph forms an obtuse angle with the positive axis of the X-
axis.
k is the angle coefficient.

3) The number b shows the ordinate of the point where the graph intersects the y-
axis.

x +3
а) y=3 x−2 ;б ¿ y=−0,6 x ; в ¿ y = 2 .
2
2. The function is given y= 3 x −1, де−3≤ x ≤ 6 . Do the points A(0;-1), B(3;1),
C(100;199) belong to the graph of this function?
3. Which of the functions is increasing and which is decreasing:
−x
а) y=x ; б ¿ y= 3 ; в ¿ y=−x ; г ¿ y=2 x .

CONTROL UNIT

1. Work from the textbook (complete the exercises after the paragraph).
2. Graph the function given by the formula
a) y=2x-3; b) y=-0.5x+1; c) y=0.5x+2; d) y=-3x; e) y=x-2; f) y=-2x+0.5; g) y=-2.5.
3. Graph the function given by y=-1.5x-1.5. Using the graph, find:
a) the value of y corresponding to x=-4; x=0; x=2;
b) the value of x corresponding to y=-3; y=1.5;
c) the zero of the function (the value of x at which y = 0);
d) the values of x for which the function takes on positive values.
