It is said that one has to master the "basics" first before he can become an
"expert". The goal of any language teaching is communicative competence which is translated
into four components namely: linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse and strategic competence.
Linguistic competence is represented by one's knowledge of the system of rules of grammar.
What is grammar? Why is there a need to teach it? How important are learning
materials, other than workbooks in the teaching of grammar?
Let's do this!
Create your own comic simplifying your points presented in your My List. Paste your

readers.
How was grammar lesson taught when you were still in high school?
Our teachers then, usually utilized don't different styles in teaching grammar to ensure that we
could engage throughout the lesson. By presenting grammatical terms and explain them
through examples. Also, we used to engage language play for further interaction in teaching-
learning process.
What specific materials did your teachers use to teach grammar lessons? Which of these
learning materials were effective in making you understand the concept better?
Most of their learning materials were textbooks, posters, and PowerPoint Presentation. And for
me, the most effective one was that the integration of technological advancement. For the
reason that it offers great opportunity to explore and learn better. It could specially cater the
needs and curiousity of their students to learn more.
How do you think can authentic materials and activities help in the mastery of grammar
skills?
Authentic materials can make the learning process even more engaging, imaginative and
motivating for students. Also, they contain authentic language and reflect real-world uses of
language. They have a positive effect on learner motivation.

What is the most significant thing that you learned from this lesson?
The most significant thing I've learned from this lesson is thru the utilization of teaching methods
along to those learning materials that would assist the needs and interests of the learners.
However, these learning materials should provide not just grammar practice but language
practice.
None at all.
Materials for Enhancing
Listening and Speaking
Skills
Introduction
The ultimate aim of teaching listening and speaking skills to students is not just for
them to know the “what” and the “how”, but also the “when” when to speak and when to listen.
In a world full of noise, conscious listening becomes very important. Studies show that
typically a person spends at least 70-80% of his time in some form of communication. With this
time, a person spends at least 40-45% listening, and 30-35% speaking. However, even though
we listen more frequently, we are rarely taught how to listen consciously. Listening is a pre-
requisite of speaking and a foundation to effective communication. In learning a language,
listening is very vital as this is one’s access to information and understanding- a source of input.
Listen to Julian Treasure in his TED Talk as he provides input on the importance of
listening and ways how to listen better. You can: access this video using this link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSohjlYQI2A
After listening to his talk, what are your takeaways?
I've learned a lot in TED Talks especially listening from an expert present could help me grow
as a future leader by providing with advice about how to lead others and myself with
confidence. And how much it is significant listening is for it connects us to others and
connectedness has been shown to be the key to human happiness. Our human connections
and relationships matter far more to us and our wellbeing than money, or fame, or material
possessions
Check out this video by Mohammed Qahtani in his speech entitled The Power of Words”
accessible at https://www.youtube.com/watch?xwbISVO:DTo&t=57s
What does the speaker say about the power of words? What then do we need to consider
before opening our mouth?
"A simple choice of word can make the difference between someone accepting or denying
your message," Qahtani said. "You can have a very beautiful thing to say, but say it in the
wrong words and it's gone." "Words have power. Words are power. Thus, we must be
cautious because your words could either destroy one's mind or mend a broken soul.
Do you think the speaker was able to effectively get his message across? Why or why not?
Yes, he did. Because personally speaking, I admired how well his way of utterances and
articulation in conveying his point.
Are the two videos you watched a good source for input? In what way?
Yes. Especially these two not only does listening enhance our ability to understand better
and make us better communicators, it also makes the experience of speaking to us more
enjoyable to other people. Hence, to abstain altercation to one another. Through which, it
reminded me again to be very careful of my words whenever or wherever I am with.
What other learning materials do you consider good sources of input in teaching listening
and speaking?
Aside from watching those aspirant people on YouTube, an actual/ situational conversations
could help. By engaging storytelling and roleplays could enhance these abilities of ours.
Two-Minute Podcast
After listening to sample podcasts in the previous task, create your own two-minute
podcast on a chosen topic like morning motivation, learning a new hobby, life lessons during the
pandemic, describing what you see, sharing jokes, news summary, etc.
Integration
Refer to the suggested framework of Tomlinson (2013) for developing materials for
spoken language. Provide 3-5 questions that address the things to be considered for each step.
These questions may serve as your checklist to ensure that you have taken careful
considerations for each step in developing your materials.
Is it appropriate to share into the class about an experience of failing thru language?
What are the commonly ways to be used in speech delivery?
What are some language citations to be used in teaching the language?
What are asked tips to be mentioned in learning the language?
Aside from using the available podcasts online, you can also create your own podcast or
audio content. In creating these materials, you also enhance your speaking skills at the same
time provide for a good source of input to your future students.
Visit this site -21 Podcast Recording Tips for Polished Episodes, at
https://castos.com/podcast-recording-tips/
Create your own podcast or audio content using any audio recording devicefor each of the
following: Read a poem/short story/or share an anecdote, then give your own takeaway after
reading the chosen material. Talk about your favorite song/s. Inspire your listeners by
sharing a motivating story, encouragement etc.
Remember to keep your podcasts short, perhaps 5-10 minutes only.
To make your podcasts more interesting, do not forget to add enhancements like
background music etc.
Internalization
Summarize what you have learned in this lesson and tell your classmates how you are
able to overcome any learning challenges by posting it in this wall or in your own Facebook wall.
