INTRODUCTION
• The Abraj Al-Bait is a government-owned complex of seven skyscraper hotels in
Mecca, Saudi Arabia. These towers are a part of the King Abdulaziz Endowment
Project that aims to modernise the city to offer world-class accommodations for
the increasing number of visitors and residents of the Holy City of Makkah.
• The seven towers of the building rest on a 15-storey and 115m-high podium,
which houses a grand retail area. The tallest tower housing the Makkah Royal
Clock Tower Hotel is located in the middle of the building structure.
• Since a great deal of residents and guests in the tower perform prayers five
times a day, innovative solutions were provided in the elevator systems that
transport people in a smooth and efficient manner. Group control systems were
implemented that adapt to the travel patterns of passengers, intelligently
anticipating their general location and destination. Using this technology, up to
75,000 people can exit all seven buildings without issue.
CLOCK TOWER
• The building is topped by a four-faced clock, visible from 25
KM away. The clock, measuring 43m×43m on each above the
hotel tower, stands out as the world’s largest clock face 400
M above ground with 2 million LED lights
• Behind the clock faces there is an astronomy exhibition. In
the spire base and the glass-covered floors (The Jewel) there
is a scientific center which is used to sight the moon in the
beginnings of the Islamic months, and to operate an atomic
clock which controls the tower clocks.
• The upper portion designed by german architectural firm
and also manufactured by germany
Incidents
Construction fires
• on 28 October 2008 it took 400

burned for 10 hours, consuming
nine floors of the tower spread
