Foreword

This translation has been made based on the original Japanese Indus-
trial Standard revised by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Indus-
t r y through deliberations a t the J a p a n e s e Industrial Standards
Committee as the results of proposal for revision of Japanese Indus-
trial Standard submitted by The Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF)
with the draft being attached, based on the provision of Article 12
Clause 1 of the Industrial Standardization Law applicable to the case
of revision by the provision of Article 14.
Consequently JIS G 4053 : 2003 is replaced with this Standard.
Moreover, JIS G 4202 : 2005 is withdrawn and replaced with this
Standard.

JAPANESE INDUSTRIAL STANDARD JIS G 4053 : 2008

Low-alloyed steels
for machine structural use

Introduction
This Japanese Industrial Standard has been prepared based on the first editions
of I S 0 683-1 and I S 0 683-11 and the second edition of I S 0 683-10 published in
1987 with some modifications of the technical contents. In addition, aluminium
chromium molybdenum steels specified as JIS G 4202 : 2005 is integrated to this
Standard a t this time revision because it is positioned as steels for machine structural
use.
The portions given sidelines a r e t h e m a t t e r s in which t h e contents of t h e
corresponding International Standards have been modified. A list of modifications
with the explanations is given in Annex JA.

1 Scope
This Standard specifies the low-alloyed steels for machine structural use (hereafter
referred to as "steels"), which are manufactured by hot forming such as hot rolling
and hot forging. Steels are normally used after further forming such as forging and
cutting and heat treatment or nitriding.
NOTE 1 Depending on the thickness, steel plates and steel strip may include
those subjected to cold rolling in addition to those manufactured by
hot forming.
NOTE 2 The International Standards corresponding to this Standard are as
follows.
I S 0 683-1 : 1987 Heat-treatable steels, alloy steels a n d free-cutting
steels-Part 1: Direct-hardening unalloyed a n d low-alloyed wrought
steel i n form of different black products
I S 0 683-10 : 1987 Heat-treatable steels, alloy steels and free-cutting
steels-Part 10: Wrought nitriding steels
I S 0 683-11 : 1987 Heat-treatable steels, alloy steels a n d free-cutting
steels-Part 11: Wrought case-hardening steels (Overall evaluation :
MOD)
In addition, symbols which denote the degree of correspondence in
the contents between the relevant International Standards and JIS
are IDT (identical), MOD (modified), and NEQ (not equivalent) ac-
cording to ISOIIEC Guide 21.

2 Normative references
The following standards contain provisions which, through reference in this text,
constitute provisions of this Standard. The most recent editions of the standards

6.1 Hot rolled steel bar and wire rod
6.1.1 Appearance
The appearance of hot rolled steel bar and wire rod shall be well-finished and free
from defects detrimental to practical use. Processing for shipment in coils does not
afford the manufacturer the opportunity to observe the whole length for defects or to
remove defective portions. For this reason, coiled products can include some abnormal
portions. The dealing with such a s abnormal portions shall be subjected to the
agreement between the purchaser and the manufacturer.
6.1.2 Criteria for removal of flaw and allowance for depth of remaining

forging shall be performed smoothly and the allowance for depth of flaw removal
from the nominal dimension shall be 4 % or under ( 5 mm max.) of the nominal
dimension. Further, the sum of the width of the flaw treatment trace shall not
exceed 114 of the circumference in the same section, provided t h a t the portion
where a flaw is removed within the dimensional tolerance shall not be regarded
as the flaw treatment trace.
The allowance for depth of remaining flaw shall be upon t h e agreement
between the purchaser and the manufacturer.
b) Round steel bar for direct cutting As a rule, the removal of flaw on the round
steel bar for direct cutting shall not be performed. When performing, the criteria
for removal of flaw shall be upon the agreement between the purchaser and the
manufacturer. The allowance for depth of flaw from the nominal dimension of the
round steel bar for direct cutting shall be as given in table 3.
