Assessment: IMMUNE SYSTEM
Assessment criteria: KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING - INFORMATION MANAGEMENT AND PROBLEM
RESOLUTION.
Aim: Students should express their acquired knowledge related to the immune system.
Clarification: It does not matter the order in which you solve the questions, do not get stuck with something
that does not come out, continue with what you can answer. You have 60-80 minutes to complete the test.
Successes!

1. (5 points) It is summer and Juan likes to walk barefoot. One day he got a nail in his foot. The wound area
became inflamed shortly after the cut was made. However, as the pain was not strong, he decided not to go
to the doctor.

a) What do you think happened to make the wound swell?

b) Which are the main cells of the immune system that participate in this response? and what functions do
they fulfill?

c) Describe what happens inside the body during the inflammatory response and relate it to the changes that
can be seen externally. Focus on the changes that occur in the tissues and the response of each of the cells
involved.

d) After a few days of being injured, Juan began to have a fever. What do you think may have happened?

e) Against Juán's will, his mother takes him to the doctor since he was at risk of being infected with the
tetanus bacteria. Which of the following treatments do you suppose will apply? Why?
i. A vaccine (preparation containing specific antigens)
ii. A serum (preparation containing specific antibodies)
iii. An antibiotic (preparation containing specific to inhibit bacteria growth or kill it)

2. (5 points) Look at the following image and answer:

a) Explain this graph. What happened during the infection?

b) How is the adaptive immune response triggered? Is it related to innate immune response?
c) What are the similarities and differences between both responses?
d) What happened during the adaptative response? And during the “memory phase”?
e) In this graph, we have schematized the level of microorganisms during infection. If you have to plot both
immune system response curves over time, how would you do it? Make a graph to show it.
