Simulation of Amplitude Modulation using MATLAB Simulink

Aim :
The aim of this experiment is to build an Amplitude modulated circuit for a continuous
sinusoidal signal using MATLAB simulink and to observe the waveforms for under modulation,
perfect modulation and over modulation.

Equipment:
PC with MATLAB and Simulink

Model Graphs:
Circuit Model:

Figure : Amplitude Modulation

Procedure:
Given a continuous sinusoidal signal called modulating signal m(t) and a carrier signal c(t), we
can obtain an Amplitude modulated signal by following the expression

s(t)= AC[1+mcos(wmt)]cos(wct). By changing the value of modulation index, we can obtain the
waveforms for under modulation, perfect modulation and over modulation.

Open the MATLAB, then click on ‘Simulink Library’ in tool bar to open it.

1. Create New Model.

2. Copy the blocks from Simulink library.
3. Click on blocks to enter the parameters (Shown in following Figures)
4. In Time based mode:
i) Consider modulating wave amplitude is 1 volt, frequency 50Hz, Sampling time is
0.00001sec
ii) Consider a carrier whose amplitude 1v, frequency 1 KHz and sampling time is
0.00001sec.
5. Change the constant value to observe the three cases,
a) for under modulation, constant=0.5
b) for perfect modulation, constant=1.0
c) for over modulation, constant=1.5
6. Save the Model.
7. Run the Model.
8. Finally click on Scope Block to see output waveforms.
