HYPOTHESES
•It was predicted that subjects imagining performing actions would develop more false
memories than subjects making no imaginings (imagination inflation effect).
•A greater number of false memories was expected among subjects exposed to modified
premature cognitive commitment procedure.
•It was predicted that the greatest number of false memories would be obtained among
subjects who both imagine performing actions and are exposed to modified premature
cognitive commitment procedure.

METHOD
•Four experimental groups with 24 subjects(participants).
•Two independent variables: Number of imaginings made by subjects (0-3) and the exposure
to modified premature cognitive commitment procedure.
•Three dependent variables were employed.
APPARATUS USED
The material used in the experiment was derived from Goff & Roediger’s study (1998).

METHOD- PROCEDURE
•The experiment consisted of four sessions.
•Half of the subjects (groups III and IV) participated in session 2 in which they imagined some
actions in order to obtain imagination inflation effect.
•Also half of the subjects (groups I and III) participated in session 3 in which they were exposed
to modified premature cognitive commitment procedure

SESSION 1
•The experimenter read out 36 critical items to all the subjects at a 15 seconds rate.
•Subjects were given mathematical problems involving simple calculations to solve right after.
•Subjects were asked to answer unrelated questionnaires which served as a 10-minutes break.
•Subjects were dismissed with 12 remaining behind for the next session.
SESSION 2
•12 subjects from session 1 were tested in this session.
•Each subject was made to imagine performing each item/action in a precise way.
•The experimenter read out a fictitious material / propaganda which was rare and concerned
10% of the population.
•All subjects were asked to answer questions based on things tested in Session 1.
•However, subjects who participated were told that tests conducted were irrelevant.
•Subjects had to answer two questions. First, “Did you hear the action during session 1?” and second, if the
answer to the first question was “yes”, “Did you perform the action, imagine it or just listen to it?”
•Session lasted 10 minutes and subjects were debriefed.

DISCUSSION
•Results obtained in the experiment confirmed the second hypothesis.
•More false memories were observed among subjects who were exposed to the modified
premature cognitive commitment procedure.
•Subjects who took part in Session 3 tried to behave in a way contrary to what they were told
to be suffering from.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion the paper can be said to be laboratory experiment approach of research because
