ENERGY

Observe our surroundings. What makes our surroundings bright? What makes things work and move?

Energy is present anywhere. It is needed by organisms like us, and machines to work. Light from the sun is
the major source of energy in our solar system because without it, Earth would have no life.

What is energy?
- The ability or power to do work
It can be transformed from one form to another in order to become useful.
Work and energy are closely related
When work is done on object energy is transferred to that object

Energy can be classified into two general types:

1. Kinetic- energy in motion
ex. Ball rolling on the ground
2. Potential energy- stored in an object at rest
ex. A boulder on a hill

Energy comes in many forms. Look around your home, and you will find different forms of
energy at work.
Electricity runs most of your appliances. Sound emanates from your radio and speakers.
Light is given off your lamps and bulbs. Heat from the stove cooks your food

Energy is the ability to make things happen, whether it involves heating, moving or changing objects in
certain ways.
- The capacity to do work comes from the Greek word energeia, which means in work.
Energy comes in many forms:
Forms of Energy
1. Mechanical Energy- is a form of energy that is directly associated with motion or with force.
Uses:
- for locomotion and transportation.
Tasks that require movement- pulling, pushing, twisting, turning and throwing
- harnessing power
- Natural sources of mechanical energy such as river flow, wind movement and tidal current are used
to run generators that create electrical energy
- All power plants including nuclear and geothermal plants use mechanical energy to some extent

2. Chemical Energy- energy that is stored in the bonds between the atoms of molecules.
Uses: life processes, electronic devices and energy production.
Ex. When the food you eat is digested and undergoes certain chemical reactions in the body, energy
is released enabling you to do your activities.
The batteries that power handheld devices and laptops use chemical energy to generate electricity
-Plants utilize chemical energy through photosynthesis when animals eat plants, they absorb this
chemical energy, which then serve as their body’s fuel in performing activities

3. Radiant energy- is the energy from electromagnetic waves

Uses: used in photosynthesis, food presentation and medical procedures
radiant energy from the sun allows us to see things on earth
Microwaves, X-rays and radio waves are all EM (electromagnetic) waves
4. Electrical Energy- is the energy produced by the flow of electron through conductors such as
copper wire.
Uses-many equipment in our home are powered by electricity- TV sets, computers, light bulb etc.
Electricity is used to power most devices, equipment and vehicles

5. Sound Energy is the form of energy produced by vibrations as they travel through a specific
medium.
Uses: Some common applications of sound energy are ultrasound imaging and SONAR- Sound
Navigation and Ranging
- Communication through the use of phones and computers
Ultrasound- used to map the internal parts of the body and monitor the progress of pregnancies.

6. Thermal or Heat Energy is the energy caused by the movement of molecules is an object.
Uses:
heating and cooking
used to warm homes, cook food, boil water and grill meat.
Control microorganism that may contaminate food.

Energy Song

Energy
Every day, we use it
All along
There is light
There is sound
also heat, everywhere
Potential Energy
is stored energy
while the other is kinetic
Energy in motion

Hey, we all see light energy. Don't we?

Hey, we all hear sound energy. Oh yeah!
and we all feel heat energy. Oh yeah!
Oh energy you're everything to me

Renewable energy
like the sun
and the wind
it's the source of energy
that's replenished naturally
but the other energy
Nonrenewable is limited
They are petroleum
and coal
don't forget natural gas

Hey, these energy are helpful you see

Renewable and nonrenewable
And we can't live without energy
Oh, energy you're everything to me…
