QUESTION 1
Figure Q1 shows an unsymmetrical plane frame ABCD, which is pinned to support A and
fixed at D. A uniformly distributed load of 25 kN/m is acting on member AB. In addition, a
point load of 200 kN is acting at C perpendicular to BD. Given that Young's Modulus, £ =
200 GPa and moment of inertia, / = 5000 x 105 mm4.
(a) Find the member stiffness factor, k and the distribution factor, DF for all members.
(4 marks)
(b) Compute the fixed end moments for all members due to the member loads shown in
Figure Q1.
(4 marks)
(c) Using the Moment Distribution Method, calculate the members end moment of the
frame.
(4 marks)
(e) The frame in Figure Q1 is temporarily unrestrained horizontally at A. Using the Moment
Distribution Method, calculate the moment at each joint of the frame.
(10 marks)
(f) If the flexural rigidity of member AB is reduced to El, comment (without calculation) on
the end moments at B.

QUESTION 4
Figure Q4 shows a rigid jointed plane frame fixed at A, C and D. Column BD is subjected to
a 150 kN horizontal load which is located 3 m from D. In addition, there is an applied
moment of 200 kNm which is located at B and acting counterclockwise. Given that the
modulus of elasticity, E = 200 GPa and the moment of inertia, / = 500 x 106 mm4, whereas
axial deformation for the frame is neglected.
(a) Draw and label diagrams of unconstrained degrees of freedom and constrained
degrees of freedom.
(4 marks)
(b) Establish the element stiffness matrices and the equivalent element nodal force
vectors in the global coordinate system.

(c) Develop the global stiffness relations corresponding to the unconstrained degrees of
freedom.
