CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Background of the Study


Technological advancement have a big impact especially on the learning of the students.

As technologies keep on improving over time there are loads of interesting software

applications and programs that have been invented by known programmers. These software

applications and programs like educational applications can be used using different electronic

devices especially in an online class. Online class is also known as E-learning is a type of

distance learning that takes place in the internet. Online learning is very different from

traditional learning and their biggest difference is that students can study anywhere through

online learning. According to the University of Illinois, there are loads of reasons why online

learning became a popular form of distance learning as this provide outstanding opportunities

for students to developed their skills and enhance their knowledge. Students have different

learning styles, some are visual learners, while some students prefer to learn through audio.

This is similar as some students thrive through traditional learning, and other students can learn

by themselves who are easily distracted by larger groups. Online learning is a perfect learning

environment as it is suited to the needs of each students.(Gautam, 2021) Taking an online

learning programs will allow you to expand your resources like Google Education.

(Educations, 2021) Now that students and educators spend more time online, they need

software materials to make E-learning efficient. G-Suite or Google Suite for Education also

known as Google Workspace is one of the educational software launched by Google in 2016

that provides services for both working and learning purposes.

According to Google, G-Suite has three features; communication, collaboration, and

productivity. Google Workspace for education is a strong ecosystem for learning. It provides

different tools that the users, most especially the teachers and the students use to make tasks

required for modern teaching-learning methods. (Romero, 2018) Schools today are looking

for more efficient and effective ways on how they can integrate and connect outside school

premises, such as using cloud-based collaboration tools like Google Workspace for education.

Google Workspace is composed of different features, making it easier for teachers to assure

the safety of the class with their students. (Castelo, 2020) In today’s society the use of

educational software programs are not only beneficial but also necessary. Studies shows that

G-Suite for Education aids not only the needs of the students but as well as the teachers and

the parents to integrate with resources through an online platform that will definitely benefit

them more than linguistically talking and reading in an ordinary classroom. (Arora, 2021) G-

Suite provides educational accounts to give teachers and student’s the access on the different

features of G-Suite like Google Drive, Google Meet, Google Classroom, etc. Google also

mentioned that G-suite for Education has its main goal and that is to make the class into a more

structured team. The software is also invented to ensure that the students will stay on tasks

provided by their teachers.

Furthermore, G-suite as an online platform for teaching and learning method as academic

year continues during this time of pandemic. These helps both students and educators increase

their productivity every day as well as showing real-time progress and makes it easier for

students to receive feedback regarding their works. (Malik, 2021). Researchers believes that

as the software offers wide variety of digital tools, Google Workspace became efficient and

effective as an online platform as it give way for the students to explore unique and creative

ways to learn new information, no matter what their learning style. (Arora, 2021) Google for

Education is the only application developed by Google specifically for the students and

teachers. It is a quick and convenient setup, for the students to easily log-in and accomplish

their tasks and even accessible to all electronic devices. Google for Education itself offers a

virtual educational space supporting interactive learning for the school institution. This also

provides students note-taking app through which they can jot down their notes and be shared

to their classmates for collaborative tasks. (Stone, 2020) The researchers chose this topic to

show how G-Suite as an online platform impacts the learning of the senior high school students

of SPCBA as these collaboration-friendly tools have transformed the way learning with digital

content can make more dynamic for the students. As stated by David Andred, a senior

education strategist for CDW, Google Education is not just about the grade – it’s about

supporting student learning.

Statement of the Problem

This research has a chief concern regarding the prime factors affecting the efficiency and
effectiveness of online learning using Google Education to the learnings of the student. To
obtain all the necessary understanding, figures, and information, the research sought to answer
the important question as follow:

1.) How G-Suite can be accessed by the students and what are the factors that might
affect its connectivity?

Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to determine the efficiency and effectiveness of online learning
using Google Education platform to the Senior High School Students of San Pedro College of
Business Administration.

To achieve this, the objectives are:

1. To determine the efficiency and effectiveness of online learning using G-Suite as a


platform.
2. To know the factors that helps G-Suite to become efficient and effective.
3. To know the effects of using G-suite Education to the students in terms of:
a. Academic
b. Emotional

Scope and Delimitations

The researchers will conduct a study to focus on how efficient and effective online
learning using G-Suite as an online platform to the learnings of both Grade 11 and 12 Senior
High School Students of San Pedro College of Business Administration. The aspects that the
researchers looking into are the different features of G-Suite that makes it more beneficial to
the modern teaching-learning method. It delimits that the study is generalize to other Google
applications that no longer offers educational features.

Significance of the Study

This study hopes to establish an understanding on the efficiency and effectiveness of


using G-Suite as an online platform to the Senior High School Students of San Pedro College
of Business Administration. Furthermore, the study could be of importance to the following:

Students. In this study the students will have a knowledge on how G-Suite can be
beneficial in their learnings by using its different features.

School Administration. The school administration can also gain significance on this
study because this will serve as a door for them to continue using G-Suite for Education as the
study shows data on how effective and efficient G-Suite to their students and educators.

Teachers. In this study the teachers will have the idea to continue using the features
of G-Suite for Education when making requirements or tasks for the students, as the study will
show them the advantages their students can gain using the said online platform.

Parents. The parents will also gain significance in this study as they’ll be able to
encourage and support their child to finish their tasks and be more productive while using G-
Suite as their child’s online platform.

Future Researchers. The future researchers may also gain significance on this study
for this may serve as their guidance to collect information regarding the efficiency and
effectiveness of G-Suite to students. It can also serve them as a building block to have bigger
studies

The Researchers. The researchers can also gain significance in this study as this
would improve their skills, strategies, and knowledge in engaging research.

Definition of Terms

The terms below are defined and provided for the better understanding of the study.

Cloud-based collaboration. It enables people to work at the same time on documents


using application that access files from anywhere with an internet connection.

Digital content. It refers to information available for download or distribution on the


internet.

Digital tools. These tools are the online resources that helps to make tasks easier to
accomplish.

Distance learning. It is a method of study where teachers and students do not meet in
a classroom but use the Internet, e-mail, mail, etc., to have classes.

Ecosystem for learning. It is an associative environment where people interconnect


with the content, technologies, and data that surround them to assist and provide
learning experiences set by the organization.

Modern teaching-learning method. It is a learner-centred and activity based teaching


method. It is called as a constructivist approach because it enables the learner to
construct their knowledge and skills through active participation.

Online platform. It is a digital service that enables interaction between sets of users
who interact through the service via the internet.

Software Application and Programs. It is used to provide ability to perform various


coordinated activities.

Technological advancement. It is a changed in the way a product or service is made


or delivered that minimize the resource input requirements for production or delivery.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

According to teachers participating in Salavati's (2013) study, digital technologies

supporting teachers and students to engage actively in leaning, hence making it to become

more real. Digital technologies also allow students to explore extensively about what

they are learning by taking the learning and teaching outside the classroom walls. Teachers’

application of digital technologies in their teaching depends upon the teaching objectives

and nature of subject matter(Geertsema, 2014). Therefore, for teachers to use digital tolls

effectively, they must consider the size of the class they are teaching, availability of the

equipment’s to be used and they should have the skills required in applying the tools. In a

study conducted by Salavati, (2016) on the use of digital technologies in education, he stated

that digital technologies are applied to complement the traditional approach of teaching.

Supplying these tools in schools cannot solve all the problems associated with learning, he

further mentioned that the outcome of the licentiate research has shown that there must be

a deeper understanding of the different worldviews recognized, particularly teachers and

their attitudes with regards to teaching and learning, it is also required to have a deeper

knowledge of existing pedagogical models and potential new models and strategies that

are beneficial to teachers’ daily work. Several studies (Mafa, 2018; Nizal, Shaharanee,

Jamil, Syamimi, & Rodzi, 2016)found out that Google classroom is fascinating in educating

and learning, students’ taught indicated satisfaction towards the learning activities in Google

classroom. Furthermore, Fahrurrozi, U. Hasanah, R S. Dewi, (2019) conducted a study to

determine the requirements for the development of learning that is exciting, active,

autonomous and effective. The results of the study show that integrated learning design based

on Google classroom is needed to improve student digital literacy. All the reviewed literatures

indicated that Google classroom is an effective tool in improving teaching and learning.

This research was conducted to utilize the activities and benefits of Google classroom,

hence to find out how efficient will teaching and learning be with Google classroom.

Related Literatures

Understanding Google for Education

Google for Education or G-Suite is a powerful cloud-computing solution that works no

matter where students are or what devices are used (Google, 2013). The platform is used by

thousands of schools and universities worldwide to make effective use of available

collaboration tools for students and faculties with the primary objective of enhancing teaching

and learning. Specifically, Google tools enable users to work together virtually on documents,

presentations, and projects in the cloud. Google for Education is used to develop course

websites, as a complement to online class instructions and efficiently deliver coursework to

students.

The potential of Google for Education-based cloud computing for improving efficiency

and reducing cost for pedagogical gain has been recognized by a number of U.S. educational

establishments. The Google for Education suite comprises Gmail, Google Drive, Google

Groups, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Sites, and Google+. Various editions of the

Google applications have been developed with specific targets such as governments, business,

and education (Google, 2013). Cost, reliability, storage and the scope of services offered by

Google for Education application are the primary considerations for adoption by most

academic institutions (“Google Plans Google Play for Education,” 2013).

Google Classroom

Google Classroom (GC) is a service in the G Suite Education product, which can be

accessed via the web using computer or by downloading the application on our mobile devices.

Google Classroom is part of G-Suite and is tied to the support of other Google applications

such as Google Drive, Calendar, Board Clock, Forms, Hangouts Meet, Docs, Sheets, Slides,

and also Gmail. This means that all of these services will be connected in the learning process

in the Classroom.

In Google Classroom, teachers and students can interact and make online learning more

productive. The platform, which was released on August 12, 2014, can simplify tasks, improve

collaboration, and foster communication. Google Classroom is also equipped with features that

make it easier for teachers and students to use it. Students can join classes using codes and can

also invite teaching assistants to the class. Students can also access materials, such as

registration sheets, class syllabus, or online texts and can also view upcoming assignments via

Google Calendar that the teacher use to have access in checking who has and hasn’t completed

their assignments, including providing real-time grades and input. Google Classroom allows

interaction between students and teachers to be more effective, and the most important is that

the platform is affordable and safe, because it is provided free of charge and never uses user

content or student data for advertising purposes. The choice of Google Classroom that we use

in this research is because it has several advantages over other applications.

Improve learning through G Suite Education

G-Suite includes different tools like Gmail which allows a common email account to

have 25 Gb storage for each individual user. It has an effective "anti-spam" filter and allows

the configuration of personalized accounts with the domain of the center. Storage and

ubiquitous access (for u-learning and m-learning) is guaranteed by Google Drive. Google Sites

gives the school the ability to create easily interactive webpages without HTML or

programming skills. Google Calendar is a scheduling and appointment book for teachers.

Timetables, meetings, and deadline are managed so students can schedule their worktime. G-

Suite also includes Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides (similar to Microsoft Word, Excel, and

PowerPoint). With Google Forms that teachers are using to collect information and know the

student assimilation through forms and questions and answers questionaries. Each of these

programs may be used individually but it is the joint use what makes the G Suite a unique and

very useful set of tools. For example, Google Classroom is an interesting and powerful

educational platform, as teachers can easily create, share and grade assignments using tools as

Forms, Sheets, Docs, etc. Because of a complete integration, G Suite allow teachers and

students to work in a collaborative environment. For example, students can create, share and

edit files simultaneously in a real-time basis. This is possible because the document is in the

cloud through Google Drive and the students gain access to it with their Gmail accounts. This

fact is also important to develop group and collaborative work skills. Also G-Suite offers more

interesting tools for educational use such as Google Keep (accessible-for everyone notes),

Google + (a social network like Facebook and others), Google Hangouts (similar to skype),

Google Scholar (books and documents search), Google Maps and Google Earth (locating

places), Google translate (language studies and more), or Google news (select sources

and receive alerts from news). Google Suite for Education and ‘Google Universe’ in general is

a powerful group of integrated tools that it is worth to use. It is a great option if teachers and

students desires to work collaboratively using interactive and easy-to-manage tools for

improving their learning process.

Benefits of Google for Education

Google for Education has advantages that are perceived as transformational in the

educational system. The adoption of online collaboration tools allows groups with common

interests to share content via “wikis, discussion forums, and through various file formats that

can be shared or edited online” (Cheung & Vogel, 2013). A typical example is how Google

Docs facilitates ease of collaboration with multiple editors to simultaneously make changes to

the same document in real time. Additionally, geographic location, platform dependency, and

compatibility issues are no longer restraining factors. With revision history, users can easily

see all changes with different time-stamps, compare different versions of the same document,

merge documents, as well as revert to previous versions of a document. Additionally, users can

use the chat tool for discussions, while the owner of the document can grant access rights to

users with different roles such as viewers or collaborators. GAFE tools are powerful and easy

to use and help “administrators manage things like users, documents and services, and keep

track of usage and data via dashboards” (Google, 2013).

Editor (2015) said that U.S. have over 40 million students, faculty and staffs that uses

Google applications for Education as their platform for teaching. Google for Education is about

empowerment, choice, teamwork, and scale. Google for Education ensures the safety of its

users as this doesn’t includes any advertisements that sometimes scans data in our technologies.

In Google for Education, all of its services are linked together for the students, teachers, and

school administrators can easily access its numerous services and extensions. According to

Vachon (2015), synchronization and collaboration are also benefits that students, teachers and

school administration can gain when using Google for Education as the files can be saved to

more than one device and users can work on the same document real-time over the internet and

can also use the chat window that is integrated with the application.

Accessibility of Google for Education

In November of 2015, Maxime Ross, a Techno-pedagogical Advisor at the Cégep de

Rimouski, published an In-depth report on Profweb entitled Le projet Chromebook et le

déploiement des outils Google pour l’Éducation. In this report, he presented the main steps that

led to the introduction of Google Classroom and Chromebook laptops to a cohort of students

in the Arts and Sciences program (AS). Responding to an invitation from Maxime Ross in the

Fall 2016 semester, a small team of teachers that had participated in the Chromebook project

as well as a language teacher who is passionate about technologies, met to speak about their

experiences and to share a most recent developments with the college network.

Google for Education can be access with the help of the internet or mobile data

connectivity through different workspace or technological devices which provides you the

option to modify your documents online and it can also be accessed offline using its extension

called “Google Drive”. (Vachon, 2015) Google states that the numerous applications and

extensions offered under Google for Education are made to be accessible for all students such

as students that have impaired vision or hearing, physical disabilities, and diverse approaches

as it provides options for how educators and students can use technology and do their work.

Google for Education provide different features such as visual aids, closed captioning, and real-

time collaboration in Google Workspace which helps students overcome their own barriers for

Learning. In addition, as Google for Education can be accessible to all of the students and

educators the application itself empowers every student to participate and succeed by making

it easier for all students to learn comfortably in their preferred workspace or study area.

SYNTHESIS

Several studies have shown that the use of Google for Education have been affecting

academic excellence and the quality of the delivery instructions by the teachers. Google Sites

offers faculties and students both communication and collaboration capabilities to achieve

optimum productivity within the classroom environment, most especially through online

learning. Google for Education makes learning easier for the students as it provide accessibility

through using of internet, mobile date, and offline using Google Drive application. Google also

made G-Suite accessible to all kinds of students considering their condition to make all students

bring out their strengths, perspective, and needs using Google for Education as their platform

in learning.

Google for Education platform, provides different features that helps to stimulate the

increased in collaboration, threaded discussions, and Q&A forums between the educators and

the students. In addition, Google for Education can be used to schedule meetings and project

events among a group of classroom students, and students can read group posts through e-mail,

the online interface, or both (Google, 2013). The e-mail and online interface of G-Suite can be

embedded in a Google-hosted course website to facilitate collaboration in the classroom. In

particular, the real-time editing using the different features of G-Suite can make it easier for

students to work with their co-students, and can also make it easier for teachers to monitor the

work of their students real-time.
