Refer to AS-01.03.101 On-site Maintenance Safety Manual for general safety precautions
and personal safety issues.

2.1 Maintenance method safety

– General KONE safety regulations must be followed during the work. All normal safety
measures required in elevator maintenance must be implemented. Local safety regulations
must also be followed.
– Refer to AM-01.03.002 Take 5 - Electrical safety when working on elevators, escalators
and autowalks. The Take 5 safety initiative is designed for installation, servicing,
maintenance and modernisation work done on the elevators.
– Refer to AM-01.03.010 Elevator installation - safety manual when working in the elevator
shaft.
– Ensure you have adequate information to do the work and fully understand all the possible
effects of your actions.
IF IN DOUBT - ASK.
– Talk to your supervisor if you have any doubts about the working method or safety related
issues.
– Any local variations to the method must be supported by a local method statement and risk
assessment.
– Follow all the safety rules and instructions concerning general working with the elevator.
– Keep the working area closed to the public at all times.
– Keep the area outside the working area clean.
– Avoid storing materials outside the working area.
– Control cabinet cover must be kept securely locked whenever an authorized person is not
in attendance.
– Control cabinet should have safe means of access in accordance with local codes.
– Control cabinet and machine should have suitable warning signs.
– When working at the control cabinet, ensure that unauthorized persons cannot come into
contact with exposed equipment. Use safety fences to isolate the work area as necessary.
– When performing maintenance work at the control cabinet, ensure that no one can enter
the elevator car.
– When working at the control cabinet or machine be aware of high voltages. Always switch
the main power off and wait for residual stored energy to discharge (typically 3 – 5
minutes). For discharge timings, refer to warning labels on the control cabinet or machine.
– Ensure that you have the necessary tools, equipment and personal protective equipment
to complete your work tasks safely.
– Use only tools that are approved for use by your local unit. Electrical hand tools
(screwdrivers, cutters) must be insulated to withstand the maximum circuit voltage and be
in serviceable condition.
– Electrical test instruments must comply with local regulations and must be regularly tested
in accordance with your local unit procedures.
