IMPORTANCE OF SCULPTURES & WATER

BODIES
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

IMPORTANCE OF SCULPTURES

The combination of sculptures and water Bodies has always been considered unique since the
Roman times.

• Adding art such as garden sculptures to your outdoor space is adding meaning and
inspiration to your own landscape.
• Sculptures can do what plants alone cannot: it triggers positive moods and brings back
wonderful memories. Sculptures enhance the human heart by bringing a feeling of peace
and inner joy.
• Sculpture choices are quite personal. The right sculpture should resonate with your true
character and energy while making the garden truly unique and original. Incorporating
original sculptures into your garden is more affordable than you think.

USE OF SCULPTURES IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN –

• Sculptures sometimes act as a focal point in courtyards or plaza areas.
• They may be created from natural or artificial materials at a great variety of forms, colors and
textures.
• Stone and wood are some natural materials which may be employed to make sculptures.
• Placement of a sculpture within a space depends upon sunlight and shadow patters which
project the object in various ways during different times of the day.
• Night lights/spot lights can also be adjust to highlight the interacting aspects of the
sculptures from various angles.
• The sculpture should be so located to take advantage of varying sight lines.

In addition sculptures provide four season interests and can be beautifully lite at night making
the garden quite memorable.
IMPORTANCE OF WATER BODIES

This is the most interesting object in landscape design. Water is essential to all gardens and
landscapes, even in the desert, although amounts vary considerably. As a design element, water
contributes coolness, moisture, sparkle, lightness, depth, serenity, the possibility of aquatic plants
and animals, and recreation.

USE OF WATER BODIES IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN –

• Water a natural element can be a prominent feature in the landscape.
• It may be used in the form of fountains, pools, differences in sound or cooling effect.
• Programming the flow of water in the fountains is done by electronic timing system which
may also control the light sequence.
• The water flow and lightning must be co-ordinated to achieve maximum effect.
• Sculptural elements of Granite or Concrete can be integrated in a water cascade or fountain
effect.
• It is a neutral architectural element which cannot be clearly classified as natural or built.

TYPES OF WATER FEATURES USED IN LANDSCAPING –

1.) FOUNTAINS -fountain, in landscaping architecture, an issue of water controlled or contained

primarily for purposes of decoration, especially an artificially produced jet of water or the
structure from which it rises.
2.) A CHAMING TRICKLE – It doesn’t take a lot of water to enjoy the soothing qualities it brings to
the landscape. A tiny fountain pump that delivers barely more than trickle can be just right
especially in small spaces where a rushing stream could overpower the stillness.

3.) A STRAIGHT SHOT – In nature waterways are always curvy and sinuous, but when
constructing one in the home landscape you don’t always have to follow suit. This one is
reminiscent of an ancient aqueduct, which is another wonderful inspiration for water features.

4.) COMBINE DRAMATIC FEATURES – This is an unusual take on several formal fountain motifs.
Lion heads are just one of many forms of statuary that can be found outfitted with a tube to pour
water out of its mouth. The ornate urns, square basin, and marble mantle backdrop all add up to
create a uniquely formal flair.
5.) SOUTHWESTERN CHIC– Arid environments can have water features, too. In this case you don't
have to follow suit and use lush vegetation. The succulents, boulders, gravel mulch, and terra
cotta color scheme all blend well together in this example of a Southwestern-themed oasis.

6.) BACKYARD OASIS - Water features add a sense of calmness and serenity like nothing else in
the landscape. They are a quiet place to reflect on the day and a boon to wildlife - from bathing
birds to garden-friendly frogs. Always consider the plant life that will go with your water feature
to make it blend seamlessly with the landscape. This could be in the form of lush plantings
around it or species that actually live in the water - which do a lot of work to help keep the water
clean. Populate the edges with reeds, sedges, and wetland wildflowers and plant floating lilies in
the deeper water.
7.) STYLIZED WATERFALL– Good landscape design doesn't always imitate nature exactly - it often
interprets natural forms in a stylized manner. Such is the case with this manmade waterfall
cascading over a series of steps in homage of the stepped stones of a natural waterfall. Floral
plantings follow suit as well.
