ELE OSH-P

Choosing the elective, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), has brought me
awareness regarding the importance of such course as a preparation when we enter the
corporate world. It has given light to the basic concepts of occupational health and
safety, its impact, and benefits to an individual and an organization which are all
essential for us students who are yet to become professionals and practitioners. During
the discussion of lecture 1 in the class, I was able to appreciate the general provision,
the meaning of the OSH standards, the different OSH hazards, the new OSH Law in our
country and the role of the OSH Center in our country which is to have effective,
responsive, and long-lasting OSH initiatives, regulations, and programs designed to
encourage good resource management and develop mutually advantageous
connections that will result in a healthy and secure working environment for all
industries. I had a better understanding that occupational safety and health’s goal is
more than what is supposed to do when accidents occur. Its main aim is to limit and
prevent harm to people and is relevant to any organization because it is the well-being
in the workplace that will truly drive profitability in the business. Thus, safety is definitely
a priority and employers have a continuous duty to safeguard its workers and clients.
Meanwhile, when lectures 2 and 3 were taught by our professor, I learned that proper
usage of equipment, reports of safety concerns, regular breaks, effective housekeeping,
reduced workplace stress, and being aware are some of the tips to consider in
improving occupational safety and health. I also became mindful that new opportunities,
mental health and well-being, increased productivity, increased awareness and safe
working culture, and correct training are the importance of having an effective
occupational health and safety program and that mandatory training programs are
present in the Philippines such as Basic Occupational Safety and Health, and
Construction Safety and Health.
On the other hand, Rule 1040 in lecture 4, tackled the policymaking and planning group
on particulars regarding occupational safety and health in the Philippines. We were told
about the Health and Safety Committee’s types, composition, and duty; which is to
develop a safety program and encourage participation of a businesses’ employees.
Furthermore, the notification and keeping of records of accidents and or occupational
illnesses which is Rule 1050 was discoursed in lecture 5. When this specific rule was
the topic of our lecture, I was deeply intrigued by the fact that such reports are not
admissible as evidence in any lawsuit or proceeding and cannot be used against a
company or firm. Lastly, in our lecture 6, we were educated regarding the progress of
OSH Legislations in the country, maintaining occupational health and safety, and OSH
legislations.
Overall, the discussions in the preliminary period of the course have equipped me
knowledge in the significance of having a safe and healthy working condition in the
future corporate world I will enter very soon.
