LEARNING EPISODE 1
The School Environment

OBSERVE, ANALYZE, REFLECT

Activity 1.1 Exploring the School Campus
To realize the Intended Learning Outcome, work my way through these steps:
1. Visit a school. Look into facilities and support learning areas in
the campus, then in the classroom.
2. Observe and use the checklist as you move around the school
premises.
3. Analyze your gathered data about the school environment.
4. Reflect on the characteristics of a school environment that
promotes learning.
5. Present your idea of a good school environment through any of
these:
a) Descriptive paragraph b) Photo essay
c) Sketch or drawing d) Poem, song or rap

OBSERVE
As you move around the campus, observation forms are provided for you
to document your observations. It is advised that you read the entire worksheet
before proceeding to the school site. A good understanding of the activities and
tasks to be accomplished in the activity sheets will yield better learning results.

“Soar High Solano High”

Solano High School is located at Gen. Luna St., Brgy. Quirino, Solano, Nueva
Vizcaya and it is near the highway. The neighborhood and the community itself
are appealing and I can say that they are one and part of the stable status. I
couldn't say much more about the area or even the closest neighbors since

the best learning experiences to the students. The school campus is decorated
in light colors, and all of the buildings are well-constructed and functional.

As I looked around the campus, I saw that Solano High School is well-kept and
tidy. Every classroom is fairly cozy and conducive to studying, which is a
significant factor in boosting student motivation. The various offices and
rooms made a lasting effect on me.

Because the walls are white and green. The surroundings and ambience are
particularly attractive. Each and every garden is magnificent. The rooms are
clean and odorless.

Overall, the educational environment is favorable to learning. So I conclude

that Solano High is ready to fly because they are willing and prepared. Soar
High, Solano High!

ANALYZE
How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of
the students going to school? What are your conclusions?

The site and classroom facilities of a school have a considerable influence

on the learning of its pupils. Students will contemplate not attending school if the
school and classroom facilities are inadequate, but they will be more willing to go
if they are comfortable or happy with the school's amenities. If you establish a
comfortable setting for pupils to study in, they will have a fantastic educational
experience.

In conclusion, the school campus is one of the places where students unravel
what is hidden in them and it is a place where we built camaraderie, where we
started to build and develop our personalities and skills. So, let us work hand in
hand to create a harmonious place and a safe place for our learners and future
achievers.

How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent

development/How does this relate to your knowledge of facilitating learning?

Through my class and environment observation, my analysis and

experiences from my Child and Adolescent course helps me to understand
deeper that every child has their own strengths and weaknesses that we
educators must know for us to provide not just equality but equity education
because of having a diverse culture, races , personalities and characteristics of
students. Wherein the development of a person from birth to adulthood includes
environment as one of its key factors. In addition, the continuity or discontinuity
of one’s development depends on the environment. In some sense, the absence of
a safe and healthy environment can lead to learning difficulties and delinquency,
or also termed “the silent epidemic”.

REFLECT
1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why?
Why not?

Definitely yes! Because the Principal, the Assistant Principal, Secretary, Heads,
Instructors and even the Non-teaching staff are all kind because they make us
feel at ease during our Field Study life. And I can say that they are competitive
when it comes to education. In fact, during my observation time I have learned a
lot of strategies on how to handle and transfer the knowledge to my students.
Fortunately, the instructors of Solano High School are innovative, adaptive to the
change of time and responsive to the needs of time which makes me feel that this
was their edge from other schools. So, I would also like to be part of a School
where a healthy environment and soft-hearted people will be part of my teaching
life.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

Generally speaking, a conducive learning school campus should have facilities

that help all types of students in the learning process. It must offer various ways
of gaining knowledge in all aspects like physical, emotional, and social, and not
only about intellectual growth. So, it must have a complete and well built
facilities and offices to give and contribute to learners’ holistic development.

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

A classroom that is clean, well ventilated, enough lighting, materials and

equipment for the learners for their activities, offices are well built and colors of
the environment and the school or buildings itself are very warm into the eyes of
the learners is conducive to learning. In addition, having a comfortable physical
space where children are able to sit comfortably, see and understand what their
teacher is saying, as well as socialize with their fellow classmates is one of the
major components of a conducive learning environment. That is why a healthy
environment with all the learning materials for the students is conducive to
learning.
4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

As a future educator, I will provide my classroom guidelines where students will

keep and always bring my name with them. Which is ANGELO which means A
Nice and Good Example of Life against the Odds. Because being a nice and good
example it means that you are doing the right things to do not just for yourself
but also for other students and even for your school.

Cleanliness, Healthy Environment, Responsible Students will be born with my

hands. And when materials, equipment, buildings or infrastructures in our
learning environment aren't working I will use my voice as a teacher to address
and tell it to the authorities.

Moreover, I will highly encourage my learners to design the bulletin board as I

instruct and I will guide them. Lastly, I will utilize ICT-Based platform and
traditional teaching and innovative strategies and have my intervention plans to
provide conducive learning to my students.

5. Write your additional learning and insights here.

From my perspective and additional learning I can say that starting from the
community, school, parents and the students must work together to provide the
best and healthy learning experiences. Because we are the foundation to
produce competent individuals who will make a better change in the future.

Activity 1.2 Observing bulletin board displays

The display board, or what we more commonly refer to as bulletin board, is one
of the most readily available and versatile learning resources.

To achieve the Intended Learning Outcomes, work your way through these steps:
1. Examine for bulletin board displays. Include samples of those found at the
entrance, lobby, hallways and classrooms 2. Pick one and evaluate the display. 3
Proposed enhancements to make the display more effective.

OBSERVE
As you look around and examine board displays, use the observation guide
and forms provided for you to document your observations.
An Observation Guide for BOARD DISPLAYS

Read the following carefully before you observe.

1. Go around the school and examine the board displays. How many board
displays do you see?

As I have conducted my environmental observation around the campus, I saw

a total of 17 board displays.

2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places where target
viewers can see them?

Board displays are located alongside covered catwalks where students,

teachers, staff and visitors walk by as they enter the campus and go around
buildings.

3. What are the displays about? What key messages do they convey? What
images and colors do you see? How are the pieces of information and images
arranged?

Board displays are mostly about the different clubs and organizations in the
school and among the students. Each board generally conveys the mission and
vision of a particular club. Different colors awaken each board and images of
different related activities with regards to a club are also incorporated in every
board display. Fortunately, the components of the board displays are well
organized.

4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders used?

The creators of each board are very creative and innovative because they
don’t just paste or post certain images but a representation of their clubs,
organization and departments. I can say that they are resourceful because they
used patterned cloth, colored papers, tapes, thumbtacks, tarpaulin, crepe
papers, crumpled pages of old worksheets, ribbons, glossy papers, and
patterned color papers in designing and completing the board displays.
5. Do you notice some errors? (Misspelled words, grammar inconsistencies
and the like)

Fortunately, I never saw any errors or grammatical errors. It is good because I

can say that they think, plan and create the board with care.

6. Are the messages clear and easily understood?

Absolutely! Even though I, myself, am just a Field Study Student I have easily
understood the things that are posted in different bulletins.

7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your attention?

Essentially, what drew my attention was the bulletin board in front of the
principal's office, where every teacher, even non-teaching personnel, had their
own bulletin board. Even the non-teaching staff has the opportunity to be seen
and acknowledged through the usage of a bulletin board. This caught my
attention because it makes me feel and think about how much Solano High
School loves all its working committees.

8. Take a photo of the display boards (if allowed).

Based on the questions on the observation guide, write your observation
report:

Observation REPORT
(You may paste pictures of the Board displays here.

“By Thy Hands”

Field Study makes me feel the struggles of teachers coming through, but now I
would like to see how powerful teachers are through the bulletin boards of
achievements.
I saw a total of 17 board displays while conducting my environmental
observation around campus, which are located alongside covered catwalks
where students, teachers, staff, and visitors walk by as they enter the campus
and go around buildings. The majority of boards are devoted to the various
student clubs and organizations at the school. Each board typically
communicates the mission and vision of its respective club. Each board is
illuminated by various hues, and images of various club-related activities are
incorporated into each board's display. The components of the board displays
are well-organized.

In addition, I believe that the creators of each board are extremely creative and
innovative because they do not simply copy and paste or post images but
rather represent their clubs, organizations, and departments.

In designing and completing the board displays, they utilized patterned fabric,
colored papers, tapes, thumbtacks, tarpaulin, crepe paper, crumpled pages of
old worksheets, ribbons, glossy papers, and patterned color papers,
demonstrating their resourcefulness.

Fortunately, I never observed any typos or grammatical mistakes. It's good

because I can say they carefully plan to produce a successful board. In fact, I
have understood the information posted in various bulletins with relative ease.

The bulletin board in front of the principal's office drew my attention, and it
breaks my heart with a smile on my face because each teacher and non-
teaching staff member has their own board. Even the non-teaching staff has
the opportunity to be seen and known through the use of a bulletin board. This
caught my attention because it makes me feel and think about how much
Solano High School values all its working committees.

With the different bulletin boards posted, such as the boards of different
organizations, offices, and the teaching and non-teaching staff of Solano High
School, they must all work together because I can confidently say that we can
achieve our ultimate goals with our hands and by thy hands.

Recommendations or Suggestions for improvement:
On this displayed board, the institutions should consider adding a layout
design. As concerned as the school is about
promoting their good, they need to improve this bulletin board in such a
manner that students, teachers, and even
outsiders can see it right away and recognize the services that this school can
deliver. Colors, design, theme/topic, well-
balanced display, and so on are all important
I propose that they utilize more recycled but high-quality materials for the
design and content of the bulletin boards, and that the content be richer or
more comprehensive, such as having contact information for all of the groups
listed easily accessible.

My Board Display Lay-out
ANALYZE

What do you think was the purpose of the board display?

The goal of the board display that drew my notice is, I believe, to inform the
public that there is a counseling and testing office for the whole campus. The
display board also attempts to inform the public about the purpose of various
clubs and offices, as well as provide contact information for the advice and
testing offices.

Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience?
Why? Why not?

Because there are just a few figure designs, I do not believe the board display
design completely represented the interests of its target audience. Although I can
state that such restricted designs are related to the display board's information,
its colors express the peacefulness that the audience may be seeking for,
particularly in subjects such as advice, counseling, and kid unification.

Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand?
Why? Why not?

Absolutely, the language chosen was plain and straightforward enough for the
intended audience to comprehend. The terminology is also acceptable for junior
high pupils.

Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?

I would claim that it is typically effective since its objective has been well
explained. And, as a member of the audience, I comprehend what the display
board is about and am captivated by its content and purpose.

What suggestions can you make?

As I indicated in my review or suggestion, I believe they should be aligned in

content, such as when one of the clubs or offices featured has contact
information, there should also be contact information. Also, filling the display
board with a number of papers or photographs as representation for the club or
clubs is strongly advised so that the audience has a better visual understanding
of what the clubs are all about.

REFLECT
1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with
effective board displays. Elaborate on why each skill is needed.

Creativity and artistry. Creativity and artistic ability are required for a display
board to be effective. It is required in order for there to be harmony and for it to
be appealing.

Resourcefulness is required because not all materials are always available and
affordable; therefore, teachers must use such alternatives.

Uniqueness. The display board should have a distinguishing feature. Something

distinct from other display boards.

Innovativeness. Innovation should be taken into account. Things must be novel

in order for this not to become monotonous. Things that are exciting must
appear.

Knowledge/Idealistic- Of course, a teacher must be knowledgeable and idealistic

in order to provide relevant, correct, and appropriate content, as well as correct
grammar.

2. Which of the skills you named in #1 Do you already have one? Recall your past
experiences in making board displays. How do you practice these skills?

I already have strengths in creativity, decision-making, organization, and

cooperation. I create new activities for my activities and know what to put in
different areas on the board because of my previous expertise developing board
displays in junior high. I hone these skills by weighing the benefits and
downsides of each choice, not just in the construction of displays but also during
everyday life. I also explore and benefit from the outcomes.

3. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on
how you can improve on or acquire these skills?

I believe there should be more focus on innovation and minimalism. Because I

don't know how to accomplish it, there are a lot of approaches or procedures
that I'm not aware of or haven't tried yet. So that I can incorporate them into my
own bulletin board, I need to be introduced to a variety of bulletin board
displays. Surfing the web may be quite helpful because it offers a variety of
sample board displays and methods for using them effectively.
