CHAPTER I

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

The new COVID-19 pandemic is having a profound impact on the existence of human
beings around the world. The government declared a lockdown that has restricted people to their
homes, executed social distancing measures, and neared all businesses. They also discontinued
face-to-face instruction at schools because of the pandemic. We have successfully reduced the
rate at which the illness spreads due to the confinement measures introduced by governments,
but as a result, mental health problems appear to have skyrocketed.
Music is one of the enormous loves of our lives. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, the
start of a new relationship, or just a bright Sunday morning or a dull working Monday afternoon,
there’s always a tune to fit our feelings and occasions. During the beginning of the lockdown,
videos went viral on social media of acquaintances vocalizing with each other across their
balconies. Study shows that when singing together or listen to music jointly, our brains generate
oxytocin, the “love" hormone and it improves our bonds
This pandemic causes high levels of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress
disorders. That's why many of us choose to utilize music as our daily therapy, listening to music
or any active participation in music-making can reduce anxiety, lower levels of depression. It
influences our brains, our bodies, and our social connection. Music has been used as a tool to
boost psychological wellbeing in people encountering situations of isolation or confinement.
Teens like me most likely listen to Pop music, because it can trigger happiness and excitement,
instilling confidence and also helping us to be motivated on completing tasks such as household
chores or homework.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Due to the emergence of various types of pop music on today's pandemic, the researchers come
up with the following problems:

General Problem: The Effects of Pop Music to the Coping Abilities of Teenagers During the
Pandemic.

Sub Problems:

 Many parents worry about the negative influences of other types of music.
 The music a teen chooses to listen to may not line up with a parent's comfort level.
 Recent American pop songs contain references to sex, drugs, alcohol or violence.
 Some Pop Music can negatively influence young, impressionable listeners, affecting their
moods, opinions and how they think about the world.
 It merges with other genres such as rap which further promotes the degrading of women,
romanticizes drugs, alcohol and violence.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Music varies from culture to culture, a phenomenon of the soul, it transmits our emotions,
sentiments and the difference between noise and music is culturally bound. Some people are
more inclined to give attention to songs that enhance their sadness, various kinds of sound can
relax, calm, and stimulate moods. Several categories of tunes induce different expressions. Major
mode generated enthusiasm with audible volume, medium pitch, fast tempo, high pitch with
major mode induce happiness similarly minor mode with sluggish tempo provoke sorrow.
Music helps teens safely explore ideas and emotions and express themselves without a
word. Because of the pandemic that is transpiring now family and friend bond over a favorite
artist, sometimes they collect some merch and CDs and listen to songs together or even attending
an online concert. Pop music motivates teens and also adults to dance or exercise, because
movement is healthy for their growing bodies. Some famous Pop artist right now like Olivia
Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande, builds a huge influence among teens. They create
fandoms like Livies, Swifties, Arianators, etc, which create friendships because of their similar
taste in music.
