Food names often have interesting stories behind them. Do you like
hamburgers? Hamburgers have now become one of the most popular foods in the
world. There have been quite a few historical stories about where hamburgers
originated (A) ( ). One of the most popular stories tells us that hamburgers
began (B) ( ) the Mongols. While the Mongols were traveling on their horses
to conquer the world, they kept beef or other meat under the saddles. The meat
turned into flat patties as it was sandwiched between the saddle and the horse’s
back. The meat became tender enough to eat raw.
Later, as the trade increased in the world, this idea was brought to Hamburg,
Germany. German people cooked the meat patties in the shape of a steak, and the
food was then known as Hamburg steak. When this food got to America early in
the 19th century, somehow it was put between two slices of bread. People called
this new food hamburger.

Feelings are the conscious result of the interaction between the cerebral cortex,
or “thinking” part of the brain, the limbic system, or “feeling” part of the brain,
and the internal organs, all of which together produce changes that affect not only
the brain, but the whole body. Our emotional responses, however, are also the
product of firsthand and secondhand knowledge. Secondhand knowledge is that
which we learn from someone else’s experiences, (A) ( ) firsthand knowledge is
that which we come to know through our own discovery and experiences. While
feelings are part of firsthand knowledge, they are easily misunderstood. If we don’t
understand our feelings, we cannot truly understand ourselves, and confusion and
conflict become our reality. Only (B) ( ) accurately understanding our
feelings can we learn to free ourselves from negative emotions, which provides
more creative energy, as well as the opportunity for limitless personal growth, and,
ultimately, connect us to our higher selves.

The power of art comes from its capacity to evoke a response. Art does not
come to life until a spectator, a listener, or an audience breathes life into it by
experiencing it. Art provokes in us a reaction that causes us to consider, judge,
emote, or perceive meaning in some way. This reaction may be spiritual,
intellectual, or emotional. Yet each person views a work of art through the lenses
of his or her own experiences, education, preconceptions, assumptions, and
interests. And because each of us is unique, what constitutes art for one person
may not be art for another. This is at the root of the difficulty in finding a
definition of art on which most can agree. But it also means that arts education is
critical. According to the educator and art philosopher Harold Taylor, the spectator
must know how to “respond to other people and other ideas, different from his
own,” rather than react against them. Spectators must “learn to accept difference
as natural rather than as a threat to their whole style of life.” In essence, Taylor is
saying that art depends on the (A) ( ) of those who experience it. We need not
approve of any given piece of art, yet we must attempt to understand the
perspective of the artist who created it before we can dismiss it or judge it.
Interactive digital media experiences provide a unique interface between the realm
of the biologically based processes of psychology and the silicon-based processes of
today’s computing machines. Computers create experiences that engage a user’s
psychology and motivate a response. With today’s latest virtual reality technologies,
it is now possible for designers to create real-world situations in a digital
environment and trigger behavioral responses that (A) ( ) their real-world
responses. In fact, the application of virtual reality exposure therapies has been
shown to be effective in the treatment of anxiety and specific phobias. These
therapies work because the virtual reality presentation provides perceptual cues
similar to the real-world experiences that trigger the physiological stress response.
Sufferers learn to overcome their anxiety and phobia by carefully designing the
virtual experience, varying the severity of the stimuli, and entraining interventions
to reduce sympathetic nervous system activation.

Although volcanoes are believed to be very dangerous, they do have benefits that
are not well-known. The thin surface of the earth near some volcanoes creates a
clean and unlimited energy resource. (A) Geothermal energy is produced when
water is pumped under the ground, turned into steam by hot magma. This steam is
used to power electrical machines, grow food in greenhouses, and heat residential
and commercial buildings during the winter. For example, in Iceland, the steam is
turned back into hot water and piped to homes for bathing and cooking.
Volcanoes are also a great tourist attraction. There are many famous volcanoes
around the world such as Italy, Japan, the Hawaiian Islands and New Zealand. Many
people visit the volcanoes in these countries to swim in the hot springs or to enjoy
the magnificent view of nature. For artists, writers, poets, and celebrities, Mount
Vesuvius in Italy is a popular destination because of its long, historic tradition.
While some tourists travel to Japan to see the sunrise at Mount Fuji, others travel
to Japan to see the largest and most active volcanoes in the world. In New Zealand,
there are many hot springs and natural hot-water swimming pools that are not
only relaxing but also good for your health. (B) ( ), volcanoes are not as
bad as everyone thinks.
Aimee Mullins was born in 1976. When she was a baby, she lost her legs. So, she
had learned to walk on prosthetic legs, and spent her childhood doing the usual
sports activities.
With advanced prosthetic legs that were (A) ( ) after the back legs of a
cheetah, she went on to set world records in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, and
the long jump in the 1996 Paralympic in Atlanta.

London show, on a pair of handmade wooden legs carved with large flowers.
In 2002, she appeared in Matthew Barney’s film with glass legs. In 2006, she

Unfortunately, however, people generally think that anger and aggressive behavior
are the same thing, so they try to hold their anger back. Anger is a natural feeling
that you get when something happens to you that you think is bad or unfair.
However, if you let your anger (A) get the best of you, it can make you violent and
cause you to fight with others or attack them. When feeling of anger are held
back, they may build up and become so powerful that they damage your
relationships and even harm your health. You can keep feelings of anger inside for
a while, but eventually they will come out, and then you may overreact. If your
suppressed anger explodes at the wrong time, you might even attack someone who
hasn’t really done anything wrong.
Therefore, it’s better to learn to show your anger in a positive way. For example,
when you’re mistreated by someone, you probably can’t help feeling anger. But
instead of acting aggressively, you can start by saying, “I’m angry at you
because...” and asking the person to explain his or her side of the situation. Then
you might ask, “What do you think we should do to make this better?” Eventually,
the two of you will probably reach an agreement. Dealing with anger this way
makes it a win-win situation. Problems can be resolved and bad situations can be
improved by taking them out.

① Sometimes anger may even hurt the health, or damage the relationships.
② To deal with anger, people may begin a conversation by saying that they
are angry.
③ Both anger and aggressive behaviors should be suppressed and remain
unexpressed.
④ By expressing anger properly, we can avoid attacking someone without any
reason.

The primary difference between introverts and extroverts ① are how they
recharge their batteries. Extroverts spend energy freely and often have trouble
slowing down. They can refresh themselves easily by doing something in the
outside world, especially since there is so much to choose from today. Extroverts
may experience loneliness and a feeling of being exhausted when they are not in ②
contact with people or the outside world. They may be the ones who are eager to
go after a party, asking, “What shall we do next?” Often, ③ the hardest activity for
them is relaxing and giving their body a rest.
Introverts, on the other hand, are energized by the internal world, such as ideas,
impressions, and emotions. They need a quiet, reflective place where they can
think things through and recharge themselves. Counter to our stereotypes of
introverts, they are not necessarily quiet or ④ withdrawn; however, their focus is
inside their head. They might say with relief, “Whew! It was great to catch up with
Bill, but I am so glad the party is over!”
① ② ③ ④
① Extroverts experience loneliness even when they are with other people.
② Introverts are likely to attend social meetings and meet other introverts.
③ There is no significant difference in recharging between extroverts and
introverts.
④ People usually regard introverts as calm and not social, but it is not
necessarily so.

Anxiety is our body’s response to threats – and since life is so often uncertain,
we all feel anxious from time to time. Familiar examples include the nervous feeling
we experience before an assessment or presentation: it can feel as though we are
stepping onto a roller coaster. Most people will agree that being anxious does not
feel good. But is anxiety really all that bad for us?
Stress makes the heart beat faster, the palms sweat, and the senses switch into
overdrive – anxiety can be mentally and physically draining. When the stresses of
our personal lives, family lives, and work lives start to build-up, ① it can feel like
we have slipped into a state of chronic anxiety, in which stress never seems to
stop.
That is not to say that all anxiety should be battled. Sometimes ② it should be
embraced, even celebrated. In just the right amounts, the hormones that drive ③ it
can be powerful stimulants, sharpening the senses. Talk to people who often have
to (A) put everything on the line – fire fighters, live performers, athletes – and you
will hear a different story. For them, anxiety is less an unwelcome foe than a
familiar friend, a force that can help them achieve great things. In their hands, ④
it is a critical ingredient to being their best.

While many shops ask, “Paper or plastic?” when bagging your groceries, there
are stores that insist on using cloth bags. If you come across such a store, you
probably want to reward the eco-friendly store and its owner somehow. Perhaps
you may think there is not much you can do. But actually there is a lot you can
do in collaboration with a large number of other consumers. Shoppers can get
organized and carry out a “buycott,” the act of purposely shopping somewhere to
bring about change.
Carrotmob is a good example of buycotting. The term is a combination of
“carrot” (an incentive) and “mob” (a group of people). It is one effective way to
persuade businesses to go greener by promising them a large number of new
customers. Traditionally, people who wanted to influence stores would boycott, or
threaten not to shop there. (A) ( ), in a carrotmob campaign, consumers
promise to support a particular business by spending their money. In return, the
business promises to make a responsible change. The concept behind carrotmob is
simple: Rather than to punish environmentally irresponsible stores, it is much more
effective to reward responsible stores.
