OT LLC EQUIPMENT NUMBERING PROCEDURE Page 4 of 29 0000-00-PRC-0055 Rev.1

1. PURPOSE

This document describes the procedure used by OT AIMT to assign tag numbers to OT
Operations equipment.

2. SCOPE

This numbering procedure is to be used for issuing tag numbers for new equipment in both
green and brownfield areas.

4. RESPONSIBILITES

4.1. Operational Readiness

The asset equipment tag number shall be a unique identifier in the OT Engineering Data
Management System and determined by the rules of this standard and based on metadata
input from the Equipment Owner.

5. EQUIPMENT NUMBERING

New equipment installed for the OT Underground Project – HNL1 at the Oyu Tolgoi mine
facility shall follow this numbering procedure.

5.1. Functional Parent-Child Relationships

To limit the length of the equipment tag numbers, the relationship between pieces of
equipment, where they are part of a sub-assembly, shall be shown on a functional basis, rather
than on a physical basis.
Figure 5.2.1 and Table 5.2.1 demonstrate the functional relationships between multiple pieces
of equipment on a conveyor. In this instance, all components within a drive module (sub-
assembly) are linked to the drive as a parent, rather than to their physical connection, i.e. the
motor (MTR) is connected functionally to the drive, not physically to the gearbox (GEA).

5.2. Main Mechanical Electrical & Telecommunication Equipment Numbering

The format for Main Equipment tag numbers is VVVV-EEE-(N)NNN where the codes used are
defined in Table 5.2.
Table 5.2 Main equipment numbering
Code Description

VVVV Plant Breakdown Structure (PBS) code

Refer to document 0000-00-STD-1024 for complete listing of PBS
codes. NOTE: Where existing equipment has a process related function
to the new equipment and has been allocated a WBS code as its prefix,
then in this case the WBS code will be used as the assigned PBS.
Refer to document 0000-30-STD-9000

EEE Equipment Code
The specific three character alpha codes. Refer to Appendix A
(Mechanical), Appendix B (Electrical) and Appendix C
(Telecommunication)
NNN Sequence Number
This is a three digit sequential number and is unique identifier for similar
types of equipment per PBS area.
(N)NNN Sequential Number
For underground project HNL1, the asset numbers will start from 2000
(For underground
project HNL1 – the
to distinguish it from the three digit sequence created for existing
sequential number assets. This is a four digit sequential number and is unique identifier for
will start from 2000) similar types of equipment per WBS area. Sequence identifiers for each
equipment code will be sequential and when the WBS code changes
the sequence identifier can be reset.

Example 5.2: Main Equipment

1860-CVB-2001 Underground Coarse Ore Overland Conveyor (HNL1 project)
1118-SWP-2001 35kV Switchboard (HNL1 project)

5.2.1. Associated Equipment

Where there is equipment associated with the main piece of equipment, an equipment number
extension shall be used. In this relationship the main piece of equipment is considered the
“parent” and the associated equipment is called the “child”, as its existence is dependent on
the main equipment.
The format for Associated Equipment tag numbers is VVVV-EEE-(N)NNN-EEES where the
codes used are defined in Table 5.3.1.
Table 5.2.1: Associated Equipment
Code Description

VVVV-EEE-(N)NNN Primary (Parent) Equipment code

Refer to clause 5.3. Main Mechanical & Electrical Equipment
Numbering
EEE Equipment Code
The specific three character alpha codes. Refer to Appendix A
(Mechanical) and Appendix B (Electrical) and Appendix C
(Telecommunication)
A Suffix (if required)
An alpha code that uniquely identifies same type of equipment in the
circuit (Note: Suffix does not apply to parent equipment)

Example 5.2.1: Associated Equipment

1867-PUM-2006 Surface Fuel Transfer Pump No. 2 (parent equipment)
1867-PUM-2006-MTR Surface Fuel Transfer Pump No. 2 Motor (child equipment)
3550-PUM-2001-VFD Pump (3550-PUM-2001) Variable Frequency Drive (child
equipment)
The above example illustrates the use of parent to child equipment number, or equipment
number extension, to identify a motor (MTR) associated with the main mechanical equipment.
In the case of multiple motors, the motors are uniquely identified with ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ etc.

and control the process flow. The instrument loop is composed of one or more instruments as
defined in clause 5.5.2.

5.5.2. Instrument Numbering

The instrumentation equipment tag number consists of four main fields to create a unique
identification for each piece of equipment.

5.6.3. Cat 1 Light and Power Socket Cable Numbering

All power cable numbers to lighting and power socket outlets shall indicate the supply point
distribution board (or control panel) hyphenated with the circuit breaker number.
The format of the cable numbering is VVVVEEE(N)NNNS-CBNN where the codes used are
defined in Table 5.6.3
Table 5.6.3: Cable numbering codes
Code Description
VVVVEEE(N)NNNS Electrical Equipment Number
This is the associated Equipment tag with the hyphens removed.
CBNN Circuit Breaker
This is a two alpha character that identifies the circuit breaker (CB)
number NN at supply point
Example 5.6.3: Lighting and power socket numbering.
1585-PDP-2401 400/230V Power Distribution Panel
1585PDP2401-CB01 PDP (1585-PDP-2401) Circuit Breaker 01 power cable(s) to lights
1585PDP2401-CB02 PDP (1585-PDP-2401) Circuit Breaker 02 power cable(s) to socket
outlets

5.6.4. Category 2 Cable Numbering

This category of numbers is used for cabling to equipment that does not necessarily have an
equipment or instrument number. They are predominantly used for data and earth cabling and
in the format VVVV- YYYYY-BNNN where the codes used are defined in Table 5.6.4.
Table 5.6.4.1 Category 2 Cable Numbering Codes
Code Description
VVVV Plant Breakdown Structure (PBS) code
Refer to document 0000-00-STD-1024 for complete listing of PBS
codes. NOTE: Where existing equipment has a process related function
to the new equipment and has been allocated a WBS code as its prefix,
then in this case the WBS code will be used as the assigned PBS.
Refer to document 0000-30-STD-9000
YYYYY Cable Code
This is a two to five alpha character that identifies the type of cable as
summarized in the Table 5.5.2
BNNN Block and Sequential Number
This is a three digit sequential number and is unique identifier for each
type of cable. For example, a new telephone cable would use the next
sequential number from the ‘TEL’ cable prefix series.
