 INTRODUCTION TO AUDIT AND
INSPECTION
SAFETY AUDIT

1. Collecting, assessing and verifying

information on the efficiency,
effectiveness and reliability of a
safety management system

2. Considering improvements to the

system
SAFETY AUDIT IN OHSAS
According to OHSAS 18001, audit is defined as the
“systematic examination to determine
whether activities and related results conform to
planned arrangements and whether these
arrangements are implemented effectively and
are suitable for achieving the organization’s
policy and objectives.”
Inspections
Inspections are performed as part of
proactive safety management and can be
scheduled or unscheduled. During an
inspection, observation and assessment
may be assisted by the use of checklist
and other measurement methods.
Reports describing findings and
recommendations are filed as required
by law and/or management.
DIFFERENCE IN AUDIT AND
INSPECTION

Audits are primarily needed as a relatively

independent check to ensure compliance,
effectiveness, efficiency and reliability of
safety management and control
Inspections are required for proactive day-to-
day monitoring to ensure hazards are under
control and risks are minimized to as low as
reasonably practicable
Safety Management System Model
