CABLE BOLT DESIGN FOR WIDE EXCAVATION UG MANAGER
PROCEDURE
MINE MANAGER

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to:
i. To provide systematic guidance for specific support and stabilisation for wide development
ii. To clarify the support requirements in wide excavation and turn out drives
iii. To clarify and determine the definition of wide excavations

2. OWNER AND COORDINATOR OF THIS PROCEDURE

The owner of this procedure is the Mine Manager and the Coordinator for implementing this procedure is the
Senior Geotechnical Engineer. Any changes to the content and conduct of this procedure are to be approved
by the Mine Manager.

3. CABLE BOLT DESIGN PROCEDURES

3.1 SPECIFICATION
The current Ground Control Management Plan stipulates that cable bolt to be installed in wide
intersection (typically >7-8m), wide excavation in ore drives (typically >6m) and also in Underhand ore
drives where overhang span exceeds 4.3m in the back. This specified support is designed to reinforce
deep wedges. The reinforcement shall be:
- Nominal bond strength of 25tonnes/m embedment length.
- UTS of element > 25tonnes/cable (single strand); double cables are installed in all cable bolt
holes.
- Minimum of 6.5m long. An example of the element type is a 15.2mm diameter, single strand,
Garford or equivalent modified geometry type cable bolt with a bulb spacing of 1m. For twin
strands, bulb spacing is 1m staggered, resulting in 500mm spacing for the twin strand cables.
- Minimum plate capacity is 18tonnes held in place with a barrel & wedge anchor, Minimum plate
dimensions of 150mm by 150mm by 10mm; and barrel & wedge anchor tensioned to 5tonnes.

3.2 DEFINITION AND MEASUREMENTS

Wide excavations are referred to those either by design or by over break. The measurements of the
excavation should be taken / projected to the top portion of the excavation walls, typically top 1-2 meters.
for arched profiles, the measurement is to be taken or projected to the top 1 meter or so between the
vertical walls. The measurement should not be taken at the grade line for the purpose of determining
excavation width for cable bolting. This is because deep wedges are most likely to be from the wide
backs that requires cable support to the backs
4. CABLE BOLT SUPPORT DESIGN

4.1 CABLE BOLT SUPPORT DESIGN FOR TURN OUTS

Typically 10 double strand cable bolts designed for supporting the turn outs with 6.5m length,
staggered pattern of 2m by 2m. The maximum span of the turn out is 9m including stripping cut for
square up the face, where 7 cable bolts is to be installed prior to primary cut and the rest of 3 cable
bolts to be installed after opening (figure 1).

4.2 CABLE BOLT SUPPORT FOR WIDE EXCAVATION ORE DRIVES

Typically 3 double strand cable bolts designed for supporting wide excavation or stripping in ore
drives, with 6.5m length, staggered pattern of 2m by 2m. The span maximum of stripping is 7-8m,
all cable bolts is to be installed prior to striping (figure 2).

4.3 CABLE BOLT SUPPORT FOR WIDE EXCAVATION OF UNDERHAND ORE DRIVES

Typically 3 double strand cable bolts designed for supporting wide excavation or stripping in
underhand ore drives (overhang), with 6.5m length, staggered pattern of 2m by 2m. The span
maximum of overhang is 6m, all cable bolts is to be installed prior to striping (figure 2). Any
excavation/stripping wider than 6m in overhang should be consider to be taken as new sill cut and
backfill the existing ore drives prior to mine beside it.

4.4 CABLE BOLT SUPPORT FOR HIGH EXCAVATIONS

High or very high excavations may require cable bolts in both undercut access ramps and
excavations for specific purpose, such as ventilation installation drives or chambers.
Typically in high wall >7m, two rows of 6.5m double strand cable Bolt to be installed to
approximately 2m off the floor, 2m by 2m pattern (figure 3). Adjustment of amount and pattern of
cable bolts should be made according to ground condition.

4.5 DESIGN ADJUSTMENT

Adjustment should be made according to geotechnical inspections, depending on the presence and
properties of the shears/faults, as well as the function and the changes in ground conditions of the
excavation.

5. INSPECTION OUTCOMES & THE TRACKING OF ACTIONS REQUIRED

When cable bolt design is applied to the wide excavation, the actual installation must be recorded in the
ground control book.
The information resulting from the inspection and the actions required will be treated as follows:

1) Non-compliant installation that require actions are entered into NHM Site Safe & PTBI Action
Register, Weekly Planning register & the weekly Ground Control Inspection Register
2) Non-compliant installations which require immediate actions are to be logged into the PTBI Shift
Change Plan, in addition to point 1).
