ELEMENTS OF URBAN DESIGN

SELECTED LOCALITY: BASAK PARDO

1. URBAN STRUCTURE

As shown in the picture below, the barangay has a complex layout of urban areas, in which the
arrangement includes several nodes and does not have a one central area. The image depicts the
Barangay Hall of Basak Pardo, which are nodes that serve as regional centers for economic or
residential activity within a larger city. This urban arrangement resembles that of the multiple-
nuclei model city in certain ways.

2. URBAN GRAIN

The urban grain is the balance of open space to built form, and the nature and extent of
subdividing an area to smaller parcels or blocks. The image below depicts a fine-grain street
pattern, also known as fine urban grain, because it is thought that an urban grain is likely to be
finest if it is located near the center of a town or neighborhood and major roadways. This is also
where the most intense movement takes place. The major road's link to the barangay's
intersections, as well as how the blocks are separated, are also shown.
3. DENSITY + MIX

The image depicts where the barangay's facilities, whether residential, commercial, institutional,
or recreational, are located. These amenities were strategically positioned near the main road and
in order of significance to make it easy for city residents to locate them. Take, for instance, the
Bamboo Village. It's the part of the barangay that's primarily made up of residential structures
that have been grouped collectively solely for residential purposes.

4. HEIGHT + MASSING

Height and massing influence the amenity of streets, spaces, and other structures by creating a
sense of openness or enclosure. Because Basak Pardo is a city, the majority of the structures
situated around the main roadways are commercial buildings. To meet the needs of city residents,
these constructions require a larger size of floor area, and the height of the buildings is also a
good building factor so that people can easily identify them.
5. STREETSCAPE + LANSCAPE

Streetscape and landscape are the design of public spaces such as streets, open spaces, and
pathways. The urban grain is the balance of open space to built form. This serves as the physical
linkages, the movement between locations since it has no built structures in it, and it is also the
mode of transport of people and goods. The N. Bacalso Avenue and the well-situated intersections
located in the barangay of Basak Pardo are examples of streetscape that also provides landscaping
elements such as trees for sun shading.

6. FACADE + INTERFACE

The facade and interface involve the relationship of buildings to the site, street, and neighboring
buildings, such as the alignment, setbacks, boundary treatment, and the architectural expression
of their facades, such as projections, openings, patterns, and materials. Because of the site's
limited and compact space, buildings were almost connected based on Basak Pardo's urban
layout. The basic standards were normally obtained in residences with setbacks and border
treatments.
7. DETAILS + MATERIALS

The details and materials make the locality or barangay develop as part of the city. They enhance
the city and can make good reputation based on the details observed and materials used. The
main attractions in the barangay, such as the Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary and Art Gallery and the
Holy Cross Paris, are also enhanced by these details and materials. The Cebu South Road
Properties and the SRP Baywalk are also part of the property.
