Engine running-
running-in with "ADT" software

1. Engine type
This Technical Instruction is valid for all W220SG engines equipped
with WECS 3000.

2. General
The software “ADT” and the file for every engine projects are available
at Wärtsilä France Technical department (Mr Daniel Billard).

3. Engine running-
running-in procedure
In order to control the speed during the running-in, it is necessary to
use the software “ADT” for engine equipped with WECS 3000 control
system.
Warning : Read completely this instruction before beginning the
running-in.
 Open ADT software.

If you have the ADT file of the project , open it :

 Click “File””Open”.
 Choose the required ADT file.
 Enter your password.
 The file opens.

If you don’t have the ADT file of the project , create it :

 Click “File””New”.
Click “Ok” for I/O communications windows.
Answer ”Yes” to the question “Do you want to read the
symbol table ?”.
 Wait few minutes.
 Enter your password.

 The file opens.

The uploading of all symbols begins.
Save the ADT file when the uploading is finished.

In the menu of the ADT file, open the folder “Speed reference
Control”.

Open the symbols “Idle speed reference" and “Rated speed

reference”.

If the symbols don't exist, you have to create them. See below the
procedure :
 Select “Speed reference control”.
 Click right.
 Choose “Add””Symbol”.

A window “Edit symbol-New symbol” opens.

To create the “rated speed reference“, fill the window like

below :

The “Start address” depends on the software version. You can

find in the chart below the address for each software version.

Create a new symbol for “Idle speed reference” in “Speed

reference control” folder (see previous page).

Fill the new windows like below :

The “Start address” depends on the software version. You can

find in the chart below the address for each software version.

To perform the running-in procedure, you have to open these two

parameters and also the symbol “Rated speed selected” and “Engine
speed”. You can find theses symbols respectively in “Speed control
reference” folder and in “Engine data” folder (see following page.)
The “Rated speed selected” is use to force the status Idle to Rated
and rated to Idle :
“0” means “Stay at Idle speed”.
“1” means “Go to Rated speed”.

In certain cases, the symbol « rated speed selected » has to be

created in the folder « Speed reference control » (see previous page).

To create the « rated speed selected » , fill the window like

below :

The “Start address” depends on the software version. You can

find in the chart below the address for each software version :

Click on “Upload” for all these symbols to see the actual values. You
have to have the following values :
 Engine speed = 0.
 Rated speed selected = 0.
Idle Speed Reference = 600 rpm or 700 rpm or 800 rpm.
Rated Speed reference = 1500 rpm or 1200 rpm.

Note
Note : Select “Periodic upload” for the symbol “Engine speed” to
see the value in real time.

In a normal start, the symbol “Rated Speed Selected” starts at 0.

The engine speed raises to “Idle speed” and after 15 seconds, the
symbol “Rated Speed Selected” is automatically set to 1. Then, the
engine speed up to Rated Speed.

In case of running-in, you have to set IMMEDIATELY the symbol

“Rated speed selected” to 0 when the engine speeds up from Idle
speed to Rated speed in order to maintain the engine at Idle speed.

You can follow the running-in program (see the picture on following
page). Indeed, you can quietly change the “Idle Speed” and “Rated
Speed” and go from one to the other with the “energizing” switch on
the engine control panel.

Speed steps : To switch from one speed step to the other, the best
way is to :

 Stay in idle speed.

Change the rated speed value to next speed step.
Change the switch position on the engine panel to energized
(in this way you keep the speed ramp).
Change the idle speed value to the same value than the rated
speed.
Change the position of the switch on engine control panel (de-
energized). There must be no speed change on the engine.

Follow same procedure for each speed step you have to do.

After the first step at 800 RPM during 5 minutes, you must stop the
engine :

 Open visiting doors.

 Verify the lateral conrod clearance.
Note the lube-oil and the HT water temperatures.
Verify the conrods temperatures. Typically, for 5 minutes of
engine running, the conrods temperatures should be at 50°C
± 5. Normally, the maximal temperature gap is 5°C between
the conrods.
If there is a problem, don’t continue the running-in without finding
the reason (call Wärtsilä France representative).

You must stop the engine after the first step at 1200 RPM :

 Open visiting doors.

 Verify the lateral conrod clearance.
Note the lube-oil and the HT water temperatures.
Verify the conrods temperatures. Typically, the conrods
temperatures should be at 80°C ± 5. Normally, the maximal
temperatures gap is 5°C between the conrods.

If there is a problem, don’t continue the running-in without finding

the reason (call Wärtsilä France representative).

Restart the engine and go to Rated Speed (1200 RPM or 1500 RPM)
step by step (see previous page). At the end of the speed tests, set
idle and rated speed to normal values before starting loading
(settings you find before starting the running-in).

When the engine is at Rated Speed :

Switch the button in energized position on the engine control

panel.
 Close the breaker.
Switch the button in load position on the engine control panel
and start loading progressively as in the following program
(see next page).
