Determine the internal normal force, shear force, and

moment at points ''A'' and ''B'' in the column.

Question:
Determine the internal normal force, shear force, and moment at points A and B in the
column.

Internal Forces and Moment:

For a given structure where forces are applied, the members produce internal reactions to
keep the system at equilibrium. These reactions are shear force, normal force, and moment.
The shear force is the parallel force acting on the cross-section of the member while the
normal force is the perpendicular force acting on the cross-section. The internal moment is
the tendency of a specific point to bend due to the applied forces.

Answer and Explanation:

At point A, the internal normal force, shear force and moment are calculated by first drawing
the FBD of the section as illustrated below.

Free Body Diagram

The shear force at A is calculated by summing forces along the x-axis:

→ ∑ Fx = 0

VA − 6 sin 30 = 0

VA = 3 kN

The normal force at A is calculated by summing forces along the y-axis:

↑ ∑ Fy = 0

NA − 6 cos 30 − 8 = 0

NA = 13 kN

The moment is calculated by summing moments about the joint of the column.
↺ ∑M = 0

(8 × 0.4) + (6 sin 30 × 0.9) − (6 cos 30 × 0.4) − MA = 0

MA = 3.8 kN − m

Point the internal forces and moment at B, the FBD below is used.
Free Body Diagram

The shear force at B is calculated by summing forces along the x-axis:

→ ∑ Fx = 0

VB − 6 sin 30 = 0

VB = 3 kN

The normal force at B is calculated by summing forces along the y-axis:

↑ ∑ Fy = 0

NB − 3 − 6 cos 30 − 8 = 0

NB = 16 kN

The moment is calculated by summing moments about the joint of the column.
↺ ∑M = 0

(8 × 0.4) + (3 × 1.5) + (6 sin 30 × (2 + 0.9)) − (6 cos 30 × 0.4) − MB = 0

MB = 14 kN − m
