I n an article that published in the August 2018 issue of the journal on pages 257–291,‘‘Management of Paediatric Ulcerative Colitis, Part 1:
Ambulatory Care—An Evidence-based Guideline From European Crohn’s and Colitis Organization and European Society of Paediatric
Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition,’’ ESPGHAN wishes to clarify that the studies on VSL#3 (name of the brand), on which these
guidelines are based, were performed on the formulation as originally produced, which contained 8 bacterial strains (Lactobacillus paracasei,
Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subspecies bulgaricus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobac-
terium infantis, Bifidobacterium breve, and Streptococcus thermophilus). In these guidelines, any mention of VSL#3 refers to the above
mentioned combination as used in the original studies.
