ELIA 113 Final Speaking Exam Information and Sample 2022.23 Va PDF
Task 1—The teacher reads 5 thematically-related questions (see Sample Task 1 below) to each student and
the student needs to respond to the questions. Different students will receive questions on different
themes covered in the course book. The student will not see these questions; he or she will only hear
them. The rating scale (grading rubric) favors longer and more complete responses.
Task 2— The teacher will read to each student a topic and some questions (see Sample Task 2 on the next
page). The student needs to think about the questions and answer them. The student will not see these
questions; he or she will only hear them. The teacher may ask some follow-up questions after the student
finishes speaking. The rating scale generally favors longer and more complete responses.
Topics for both tasks come primarily from the sections marked “Speaking” in each unit. These are often
near the end of the page in .1, .2, and sometimes .3 parts of the unit (for example, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3).
Sometimes they come from other places in the unit marked "Speaking”.
Occasionally a prompt may come from a page not listed below. In these cases, it will still be related to the
major themes of the units and/or any themes mentioned in the bulleted “goals” on the Contents Page of
the course book. Finally, in some cases the bullets for a prompt may combine themes from several units.
In most cases, on any one student’s exam, the themes for Task 1 and Task 2 will come from different units:
