b) A rod of weight 400 N is hinged to a wall and is kept at 40° with

the vertical by a horizontal cable attached at three-quarter of its
length. A load of 500 N is hanged at the end of the rod.

i. Sketch the free body diagram of the rod. [2 marks]

2. a) State two (2) conditions of dynamic motion. [2 marks]

b) A wheel (radius = 0.20 m) is mounted on a frictionless, horizontal

axis. A light cord wrapped around the wheel supports a 0.50 kg
object, as shown in Figure 1. When released from the rest the
object falls with a downward acceleration of 5.0 m/s2.

Figure 1

i. Sketch the free body diagram for the wheel and the object. [2 marks]

[1.92 ×10-2 kg m2]
c) A primitive yo-yo is made by wrapping a string several times [4 marks]
around a solid cylinder with mass M and radius R. The end of the
string stationary while releasing the cylinder with no initial
motion. The string unwinds but does not slip or stretch as the
cylinder drops rotates. Use energy considerations to find the speed
v of the centre of mass of the solid cylinder after it has dropped a
distance 0.65 m.
[𝟐. 𝟗𝟐 𝒎 𝒔−𝟏 ]
3. a) Figure 2(a) shows a graph of displacement, y versus time, t and
Figure 2(b) shows a graph of displacement, y versus distance, x of
a progressive wave.

4. a) Figure 4 shows a loudspeaker S emitting sound wave of frequency
205 Hz in front of a closed pipe P. The length of the pipe is 2 m, and
its open end is at position x = 0 m. The air column resonates at fifth
harmonics.

Figure 4

i. Sketch the stationary wave pattern formed in the air column at its [2 marks]
fifth harmonics. Label all the nodes and antinodes at their
respective positions.

ii. Determine the positions of the nodes and antinodes for this [2 marks]
harmonic.

b) A bat is hunting for a moth at night. Before the bat starts hunting,
it tries to locate a moth by emitting sound pulses at stationary and
detecting the echo. The frequency emitted by the bat is 10 MHz.
Assuming the temperature is 23°C.
