ACT I SCENE I
LIFE IN THE CITY
In the city of Manchester, about a half a mile away
from the astonishing Bridgewater Hall and a 5-
minute walk to old Trafford lived a fourteen-year-old
boy named Ethan.
Ethan is walking to school and he bumps into
Jeremiah on the way there.
ETHAN: Hey jerry,[he waves Jeremiah and
approaches him]
JEREMIAH: Hi Ethan, so how has the day been
going for you.
ETHAN: Good. So far and I’m really excited to get to
school.
JEREMIAH: Ha-ha same old Ethan. [ Looks at his
watch and is shocked] OH NO its past seven were
going to be late.
ETHAN: I thought you were around because of the
bus
JEREMIAH: the bus comes by 7:30 and its already
eight o clock
ETHAN: We can still make it if we run
JEREMIAH: Just like old times right

[the two laugh along as they dashed to school] 1

ETHAN: The school is just around the corner
JEREMIAH: You know what? I don’t want to even
go to school today.
ETHAN: Jerry, you just read my mind
[the two boys dropped their bags beside a small tree
and ran free into the city of Manchester]
JEREMIAH: Let’s go visit the old baker that always
gives a treat or two when we come by his shop.
ETHAN: Sure, but lets not waste a lot of time because
my mom pops by the shop to say hi to the baker.
[they go into the bakers shop and greet him]
BAKER: Ethan you’ve grown so much since the last
time I saw you and I see you’ve brought jerry along
with you and you’re just in time, I just finished
baking the cheese croissants and they’re on the house.
As Ethan smelt the fabulous cuisine his mouth was
bubbling like boiling water in a pot.
JEREMIAH: Can we eat in here in the shop
BAKER: Of course, Anything for an old
friend[ THEY SIT AND EAT]
ETHAN: Sir.
BAKER: Yes Ethan
ETHAN: Do you live alone?
BAKER: Unfortunately, yes my wife passed away
about 5 years ago and my son is part of the navy, it’s
been a very sad five years and when I met you I See
you as family.[Jeremiah picks up a photo]
JEREMIAH: Sir, who are the people in this photo
BAKER: That’s my daughter and my grandkids
James, Lucy, Andrew and little Timmy.
ETHAN: Can’t you go visit them?
BAKER: It isn’t that easy Ethan, they live all the way
in Washington in the US. That would take not less
than three flights and 5000 pounds and I don’t have
that kind of money.
JEREMIAH: We can help you.
BAKER: What do you mean?
ETHAN: We’ll help you get to Washington
BAKER: Kids that’s kind of you but [ Jeremiah
interrupts]
JEREMIAH: No buts, and please when is your
birthday
BAKER: 27th of January, why?
ETHAN: Mark my words three months from know
you will go and see your grandkids.
[Ethan’s mom arrives and calls for the baker]
MRS HUEY: Good morning, Any one there
BAKER: [Whispers] Go out back and take the bikes
there.
BOTH BOYS: Thank you sir
MRS HUEY: Hi Mr. jones
BAKER: I’m sorry but we’re closing very soon
maybe tomorrow
