Let’s look at the circles shown above-

Place concentric circles of varying sizes available to cut out from
the previous page / create your own circles using origami sheets/
card paper/ felt sheets or simply make a painting project of it.

The red circle is you. 🔴

This is a good exercise In perspective and understanding scale.

Let’s place you in your house. 🟠

Where is your house? Inside a colony within a

neighbourhood? 🟣 Place your house inside your colony and
neighbourhood.

Let’s move up. Which city is your neighbourhood in? Let’s

place your neighbourhood in your city. 🔵

In which country is your city? Let’s place it in your country

circle. 🟢

Which continent does your country lie in? 🟤

And we all know that all continents of the world are found on Once the circles are placed one above the other going from big to
our home planet. What is it known as ? 🟡
small (space to you), build a colour key.

Draw small circles, colour them and make the child note down what
each colour denotes. This helps the child to use spatial skills and

Printable compass rose

Use the cards denoting Earth in space to create
a ip book or accordion book, or use them as
reference for a painting project on stones (going
from space to Earth on decreasing sizes or
stones)

Use the world maps to learn to identify

continents and their positions. Pair these with
books, puzzles and other tools you may have at
home- Atlas, Globe etc.

Make multiple copies of the maps to use as

colouring sheets for continent identi cation.

Use the compass to learn 4 cardinal directions

- N S E W and extend the concept to identify
and name NW NE SW SE. Make 8 copies of the
compass rose and colour one di erent direction
on each print. Use the same colour or di erent
colours for each of the 8 directions. You may
use these as direction cards to match the name
or abbreviation (North West - NW)

🧭 Make a simple compass at home: Use a refrigerator

magnet to magnetise a sewing needle by rubbing the
magnet on the needle 20-30 times in one direction. Float a
small piece of paper (larger than the needle) in a bowl of
water and carefully drop the needle on this paper. The
needle will naturally point to the closest pole (North Pole in
the Northern Hemisphere, and South Pole in the Southern
Hemisphere)

Etymology- what do the continent names mean?

Asia
Africa

The word Asia is derived from Ancient Greek When the Romans invaded this land, it is popularly believed
“Ἀσία”, which came from the Phoenician word that they named it after the native tribe- the Afri; and Africa
“asu” meaning East; and the Akkadian word would mean “the land of the Afri”.

“asu” meaning “to rise” (referring to the sun).

Hence ultimately, Asia means “the land of the Also, From Greek - aphrike (*ἀφρίκη) "without cold"and in
sunrise”
Latin- aprica "sunny".

Another theory states that the name Africa comes from the
Australia
Phoenician word “afar” which means “dust.” Put together
Australia as a continent name was o cially adopted with the Latin su x –ica, sometimes used to denote “land”,
in 1824, though the term “Terra Australis Incognita” the name could mean “a land of dust.”
which in Latin means “unknown land in the south”
was used as early as by the Romans who guessed
of its existence in the south.
Europe

When European explorers discovered this land, they Europe was likely named after Europa from Greek
continued to call it “Terra Australis” meaning land in mythology. The word derives from the Akkadian word
the south” “erebu” which means “to go down, set” or the Phoenician
“ereb” which means “evening”.
North and South America

Both the Americas have been names after Amerigo Antarctica

Vespucci, an Italian explorer, who travelled to “the The name Antarctica comes from the Greek word

new world” in 1499 and 1502. He wrote about his “-antarktikos (ἀνταρκτικός),

travels in 2 books which were reprinted in almost from anti (ἀντί) and arktikos (ἀρκτικός) "Arctic"

A national ag is a ag representing a country or nation. The national ag is own by the country’s government, but
in most countries can also be own by its citizens (This would be speci ed in the ag code or ag laws of the nation)

A national ag is designed with speci c meanings for its colours and symbols. The art and practice of designing
ags is known as vexillography.

Changes are made in the design of a nation’s ag after important historical events occur.

coloured boxes of each colour you have coloured in the table above and note down
your answers)

Red

White
2.Which colour is most used in these countries’ ags? (The colour with the

3. Which colour gets the second and third highest score? Can you now design

a new ag with these three colours that are most commonly used in these
country ags? You can add symbols of your choice. Do explain what each

Step 3- Analysing the data

Download the one inch graph paper printable available at Madison Paper

Let’s make a simple bar graph. We will use the data from the table to create a bar graph. A bar graph helps one to
compare actual numbers and also to compare across categories. In this case, we will plot actual numbers of colours
seen. Whenever we represent data like this, the real numbers are shown. You may convert your data to percentage
and plot a bar graph too. If you know how to convert percentages to angles, then you can build a pie chart too!

On the graph sheet make a vertical axis (the Y- axis) by starting at 0 and counting up to 10

Starting from point 0, make a horizontal axis (X axis)

Mark the point 0 where the 2 axes meet as O (Origin)

number of boxes on the graph. You are creating bars. Do this for all colours.

2
1. Which colour has the tallest bar? This is the most commonly used colour

2. Which colour is least used in the ags?

3. Do any two or three colours have the same height of bars? Which are they?
