Introduction
Course description

• Building materials- its properties, composition, application and articulation including


the mode of specifying these materials in building construction.

Objective

At the end of the term, the student should be able To:

• Identify the basic properties and composition of building construction and finishing
materials including their application and articulation in the building envelope.

• Apply building materials- its installation, fabrication and maintenance methods and
techniques relative to building design and construction.

• Specify appropriately building materials considering its applicability, practicability and


its functionality and in accordance with the standard and uniform system of
specification.

• Classify building materials, both imported and local (indigenous), as used in the
building construction industry.
•Introduction-history of materials as used in building construction, material properties and
its application.

• Classifications of building stone.
• Metals
Ferrous Metals
Non-ferrous Metals
•Glass and Glazing.

WEEK 5-8

• Concrete and concrete products


• Cement
• Aggregates
• Adhesive and Sealant.
• Waterproofing, damp- proofing, termite control systems and Insulation (thermal).
• Paints and Paint Products
• Plastic and Synthetic Materials
• Indigenous materials
• Non-conventional materials such as saw dust, rice husk, Ipil, coco lumber, etc.
• Recyclable material and other Alternative Building Materials

WEEK 9-11

•Fundamentals of building processes, methods and techniques in construction,


Erection, Addition, Repairs, and Renovation of buildings/ structures
Carpentry and Joinery
Hardware and Ironmongery
Sheet metal and Tinsmitry
Structural Steel Construction
Fenestration
Specialized Works

WEEK 12

• Submission of Portfolio & Building Material Swatches and Brochure.
