Enchanted Elegance
Combine soft pastels with gorgeous metallics
Who doesn’t want to feel like a princess on her wedding day? For
brides who dream of a fairytale day, then this shoot is for you. Think
soft blues, opulent elements of gold, luxurious crockery, statement
candelabras and of course, a dramatic wedding gown. “I was inspired
by the modern adaptation of Cinderella and wanted the shoot to
embody a whimsical fairytale-esque style,” says Wedding and Event
Expert Bethany Bevis from Mode20. “The use of delicate flowers, such
as lisianthus, pretty spray dianthus and tulips achieved a timeless and
elegant look. The eryngium, thlaspi and gypsophila created a variety
of textures and modernised the designs. Different shapes and textures
words: CHARLOTTE PAGE

are vital to the arrangements, as the colours are minimal,” explains

Sophie from Sophie’s Flowers & Events. “The personality conveyed by
the flowers is one of romance, nature and an enchanted forest.” If you
want to recreate this look ask your florist to use plenty of greenery in
your arrangements. Feathery foliage such as ferns will help to soften
the appearance of the designs.

Rustic Romance
Set the scene with a garden backdrop
and an abundance of blooms
Flower-filled wooden crates, mismatched floral crockery and
jam jars decorated with hessian and lace… for those of you
dreaming of a vintage wedding, this shoot will give you heaps
of inspiration. “We wanted to show how old rustic items can
be transformed into show stopping venue decorations,” says
Wedding and Event Décor Specialist Tamar Wilkinson. “It
was important to create impressive floral arrangements that
were natural and unstructured to fit in with the rustic theme. In
order to achieve this, we used a variety of wildflowers including
foxgloves, daisies and gypsophila.” With wildflowers it’s all
about the different textures, colours and shapes. This will make
your florals exude natural beauty with a just-picked-from-the-
garden look. Other beautiful garden flowers to use are clematis,
honeysuckle, sweet peas and roses – and don’t forget to add
herbs for a heavenly scent. Search charity shops for vintage
items to repurpose as flower containers; old milk churns,
lanterns and bicycle baskets make interesting vessels and will
help to enhance a rustic theme. Just remember – it’s all about
attention to detail when it comes to recreating this style.

Floral dream
Bring the outdoors in with an amazing
flower installation
Fall in love with this dreamy shoot, which took place within the majestic
surroundings of Aynhoe Park. The combination of an impressive venue
and an abundance of blooms is guaranteed to wow your wedding
guests. Draw inspiration from this contemporary style and use flowers
to decorate everything from staircases to your cake table. “Wedding
flowers are no longer confined to vases and bouquets,” says stylist Alex
from The Bijou Bride. “They can be used to adorn all areas of your
chosen venue. Peachy tones and soft greenery are the perfect pairing for
brides looking for a fresh take on romantically pretty styling and the rich
shades of berry blooms really amp up the glamour. Sprawling foliage
interspersed with colourful flowers is a big trend for 2016 and with
this shoot we really wanted to take that to the extreme.” To make a real
impact with lush flora, ask your florist to ensure your flowers are vivid
enough to really pop against a backdrop of wild green foliage.

Potty
about
plants
From hanging displays to centrepieces,
potted plants are a budget-pleasing
and eco-friendly alternative to cut flowers

Scent-sational
seating
Potted plant table plans are a fun DIY
project that a green-fingered bride or
members of her family can get involved in.
Not only do they help wedding guests get
to their seats, but they also double up as
creative décor. If you choose a mixed
selection of plants you could even use them
to name your tables – ideal for a garden-
themed wedding.

Line the aisle

Take inspiration from Will and Kate’s wedding at Westminster
Abbey by using plants that are growing rather than cut. Why
not have miniature potted trees lining the aisle? Small citrus
trees will add a pop of colour too. Alternatively, you could
follow in the footsteps of Mark and Michelle Wright (see left),
whose wedding flowers were designed by Interflora. You can
also add ribbons or fairy lights to create an even more
romantic atmosphere.

Make an entrance
Greet your guests with a floral welcome: place
a potted plant at either side of your wedding
entrance or focal point for a clean and modern
vibe. For brides who prefer a more relaxed feel,
cluster different pots together in a group. It’s
amazing what a lick of paint can do, so don’t be
afraid of decorating store-bought pots to add
some colour. We think that this is a great way to
strategically draw attention to your entrance and
wow your guests all at the same time.

or table – hang them from the ceiling instead!
This is a great way to create the illusion of a
bigger room as they will draw the eye up from
the floor to the ceiling. Hang them by the altar,
windows or, if you’re having an outdoor
wedding, drape them from the trees.

Centre-stage
Grow your tablecentres from seed or plant
flowers in vessels before the wedding for
beautiful reception décor. Use unexpected
vessels as containers to make an impact; search
the shops for pitchers, teacups and other
vintage pieces to pot your plants in. Here at
Wedding Flowers HQ, we love orchids. They
come in an array of colours, are easy to look
after and their blooms are long lasting, meaning
they can be bought weeks before the big day.

delicious! These beautiful cakes are loaded with flowers...
and yes, they're almost too pretty to eat!

S ugar flowers
Adorn your wedding cake with flowers made of sugar for a classic
look. Although beautiful, sugar blooms can be expensive due to the
time and skill involved in making them – brides on a budget could
consider having a single large statement flower or decorating just
the top tier instead. With sugar you can create any flowers you desire
(even ones that don't exist), so the design possibilities are endless.
A massive bonus is that sugar flowers last forever, so they will make
an ideal keep-sake and memory of your special day.

sugar fakes, decorate your cake with hand-
painted flora. With a hand-painted design, your
cake is guaranteed to be one-of-a-kind and
completely bespoke for you. It's a great way to liven

cupcakes and cookies too. And if (like us) you can't
get enough of flowers, combine both hand-painted

We chat with expert florist Joanne Truby and discover her pick of the bunch trend-wise

Look up
“This year hanging flower designs are set to become
even more elaborate. Brides will continue to seek
out unusual containers for centrepiece flowers – one
favourite is terrariums in geometric shapes. Elevated
centrepieces displayed on raised platforms are also
becoming popular.” Joanne continues: “There is a
new movement emerging, moving away from glitz
and focusing on earthy arrangements paired with
luxe details. Brass ornate bowls with foliage-heavy
arrangements and wide unstructured bouquets
finished with hanging silk ribbons also look beautiful.”

Bright and beautiful

“2016 will see couples opting for rich, vibrant shades
in jewel tones such as plums and aubergines; they’ll be
moving away from the lighter peach and blush shades
which have been popular during 2015.” Joanne reveals.
“Following on from the announcement of the Pantone
colours of the year, blue is set to make a comeback,
complimenting the sister shade rose quartz, a beautiful
blush pink that is always a very popular bridal shade.
Mixing warmer pink shades of roses, ranunculus,
tulips, sweet pea and peonies with the cooler tranquil
blues of hydrangeas, nigella and delphiniums will
make a beautifully romantic combination which can be
styled in either a traditional or contemporary way.”

Club Tropicana
“Foliage-heavy arrangements will continue to be key for the
year ahead,” explains Joanne. “Tropics will be absolutely
everywhere, incorporating tropical foliage such as palm
and aspidistra leaves. “Flower wise, protea will make an
appearance, incorporated into floral designs along with other
tropical variations such as pin cushions and blushing bride.”

Flowers galore
“I’ve found that couples are increasingly looking at ways
to incorporate flowers into other elements of their day
besides from the traditional bouquets/button holes and
table centres. Flowers for wedding signage and table plans
are becoming so popular along with dressing table place
names with single stem flowers or sprigs of foliage/herbs.”

Julia & MATTHIEU
Julia Maksy, 31, a GP, and Matthieu Baxas, 30,
a construction manager, married at the Église
Notre Dame de Berneuil church, followed by
a reception at Grenier des Saveurs in France.
Budget: £15,000-£20,000
Matthieu and I first met at a music festival nine
years ago in the south west of France. We decided
to stay in touch and met up again in the Basque Coast
one weekend. It is now a place very close to our hearts.
I wore a dress that was created by the same
seamstress who made my mother’s dress 30 years
before. I loved its floaty boho style and it all felt very
romantic. Matthieu looked dapper in his blue Eleven
Paris suit, which he wore with a Liberty-print bow tie.
We wanted a laid back, warm and colourful wedding
with a barn feel. We loved how our venue had an old
barn lost in the middle of the countryside feel. It felt
authentic and homely at the same time.
Our reception room was magical; we used candles
and fairy lights to make the whole room glow in a
soft light, and wove through some of the bunting that
Matthieu’s grandmother makes. Everything wooden
was made by Matthieu and his best man.
The vibe was laid-back and colourful, with some
spontaneous elements – our guests surprised us
with a flashmob dance! Later in the evening we all got
warm and cosy by the campfire making S’mores, and
one of my favourite moments was when we let the sky
lanterns fly away at the end of the night.
We had the most amazing day and didn’t get to bed
until 6am! We were the first and last on the dance floor.
We had music playing throughout the whole party,
cocktail hour and brunch.
I made up ‘day-after’ kits for my bridesmaids with
concealer, vitamins, tea, ibuprofen, a hair brush and
candies to help them through. Matthieu gave his
groomsmen a box containing a personalised flask of
whisky, a Cohiba cigar and a pair of socks.
My tip for brides-to-be: Don’t limit where your
inspiration comes from – and remember to enjoy every
single second of the day, because it goes by so quickly.

“We decided to go for colourful flowers
that were in season,” explains Julia. “For
our centrepieces we opted for three big
jam jars in varying heights and filled them
with flowers. The pews in the church were
decorated with pretty posies and the
entrance and altar were blooming with
flowers in old wooden crates. For my bridal
bouquet, I chose thistles, craspedias and
hydrangeas as I wanted a variety of flowers
and plenty of colour!” Julia continues,
“Matthieu’s buttonhole was made using
the three main flowers from my bouquet,
so we would complement one another.”

jenna & dave
Jenna Eaton, 30, a nail technician, and
Dave Winfield, 27, a professional sportsman,
held both their ceremony and reception at
Pimhill Barn in Shropshire.
Budget: £25,000
Together with our personal taste and the love
we had for our venue, vintage shabby chic was
the perfect complementing theme. We worked
together with a prop hire company (Sweet pea &
Ivy) to bring our vision to life, they were amazing.
Pimhill was the first and only venue we viewed.
We were so keen to have a blank canvas to make
our own, and Pimhill offered just that.
We wanted to create a fun and relaxed
atmosphere for our guests; we ordered vintage-
style disposable cameras which were placed on
our guests’ tables for them to enjoy – we are saving
to get these developed on our first anniversary!
We carried the vintage theme through to our
favours – these actually doubled as placement
settings: each guest had their own vintage-style
cupcake placed in a vintage teacup and saucer
with their name on a cake topper flag – they
looked really pretty and complemented our theme.
We gave our florist creative licence when it
came to putting the finishing touches to our
props and centrepieces. We wanted a very
natural and rustic look, so the centrepieces were
ceramic jugs filled with a variety of wild meadow
flowers. It looked gorgeous.
I adorned my bouquet with gorgeous charms in
memory of loved ones who are no longer with
me – they were not only the perfect memento, but
made for the prettiest accessories, too.
The most memorable moment from the day had
to be the surprise firework display arranged by
Dave. During the display our favourite song, She
Moves In Her Own Way by The Kooks played – it
was truly spectacular.
My tip for brides-to-be: Go with your heart, as
you will only do this once!

were absolutely gorgeous and the groom’s
button hole matched my bouquet. I went
for David Austin Roses as they were the
first flowers Dave bought me, and I’ve
loved them ever since. My bouquet was
very simple but had a vintage look to
it.” Jenna continues: “We had a large
wall- hanging heart at the end of the aisle
which was made out of gypsophila, and
was absolutely beautiful. Also on the aisle
hanging from the chairs were jam jars
filled with the same flower – it made the
ceremony room look so pretty.”

Becky & JAMES
Becky Walkinshaw, 24, a full-time mum,
and James Kennard, 27, a sales director
at a recruitment agency, held both their
ceremony and reception at Ashridge
House in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.
Budget: £30,000-£40,000
James and I chose a navy blue and blush pink
colour scheme for our day. The colours worked
really well together and helped to create the
elegant and romantic ambience that we wanted.
Our historic venue was just gorgeous! We
loved everything about Ashridge House, from
the carved stone staircase where we said our
vows, to the marble fireplace and gold leaf
ceilings which adorned the room where we
ate our wedding breakfast.
It was so convenient to have the whole day
in the same place; this way our guests were
able to experience a different room for each
part of the day.
My mum helped me to make our favours.
I also hand-made our seating plan which was
a map of the world – the tables were named
after places we had visited as a couple.
The cake was made by a family friend and
we opted for a design which was simple yet
still very pretty. When we went to cut it, our
two-year-old son started singing Happy
Birthday, which made everybody laugh.
For our evening entertainment we had
a percussionist and a DJ. My family were
the first up on the dance floor, but myself and
my friends were definitely the last. We partied
until the final song!
My tip for brides-to-be: If you’re planning

separate, smaller posy – this way you won’t
have to throw your own. When I threw my
bouquet, one of my guests really wanted to
catch it and made sure she did which really
made me laugh!

DEBORAH & Ollie
Deborah McBrien, 32, an NHS quality
improvement project leader, and Ollie Lane,
35, a head of IT infrastructure at a ministerial
department, tied the knot at Mount Ephraim
Gardens in Faversham, Kent.
Budget: £20,000-£25,000

Ollie and I were on a weekend trip to Bruges when

he surprised me on the last evening by popping the
question on St. Bonifacius Bridge. I wasn’t expecting it
at all and naturally burst into tears!
We fell in love with our venue, Mount Ephraim
Gardens in Kent, straight away. The combination of the
house and the gardens offered a plethora of outstanding
photo opportunities.
We opted for a BBQ at our evening reception to
make the most of the gardens and to recreate the
summer family BBQ’s we fondly remembered from our
childhood. The younger guests were able to play on the
grass and everyone enjoyed the great food, company
and a drink or two.
For evening entertainment we decided to have a
band. This was important to us as we both love music.
The band ended up playing a very important role in our
day as they performed an acoustic version of the John
Legend track All of Me for our first dance.
Shuffling around the dance floor for our first dance
was not what we wanted, so we had a couple of dance
lessons in the week building up to the wedding day. We
words: charlotte page

put together a simple Waltz routine and even though

there were a few stumbles, it was still magical.
Tip for brides-to-be: Don’t panic about the little things;
the guests will be so focused on the bride and groom
that they won’t notice if a small detail is forgotten or if
something didn’t quite work out.

“We knew that flowers were going to
be a major focal point of our day,” says
Deborah. “We opted for the wild flower
look and placed the blooms in jars
collected by our family and friends. Ollie
wanted a blue suit so we knew this colour
would feature heavily in the wedding.
With this in mind, we decided that blue
delphiniums would be included in all of
our floral arrangements. We loved their
height and shape. Orange was the perfect
bright colour to complement the blue
so we opted for orange dahlias in the
bridal bouquet, bridesmaids posies and
buttonholes.”

The key to having an authentic looking and

words: LAURA ATRI. Photography: krista fox (kristafox.com)

Parisian-inspired wedding is all in the details.

Think romantic hues of pale purples and dusky
pinks, dreamy lace, antique accessories and
especially, copius amounts of roses. Cover every
surface with fresh flowers, adorn chairs with
hydrangea, and add sprigs of lavender to your
glassware and table centrepieces. Display your
desserts on a vintage-looking dresser and drape
tables with heavy lace covers to add a hint of ooh
là là. If you want to prevent the lavender from
becoming overwhelming, then add in dashes of
pinks and cream – they will complement without
distracting, as well as creating that much-desired
romantic ambience. Lastly, no French wedding
would be complete without the traditional
macaron or two, of course!

“This bark-covered vase arrangement would look lovely as part

of a barn wedding or rustic theme. Aromatic rosemary adds a
woodland scent and the inside of the vase has been layered with
dark green moss. These containers are very versatile and also look
great with candles inside; use them as lanterns on the tables, with
hessian runners and scattered petals.”
