PRINTMAKING (SILKSCREEN PRINTING)
Learning Competency
• Explain the truism that design principles still apply for any new design (contrast of colors,
shapes, and lines produces harmony) whether done by hand or machine (computer); (A6EL-
IIIa)
• Demonstrate understanding that digital technology has speeded up the printing of original
designs and made it accessible to many, as emphasized in t-shirts and poster designs. (A6PL-
IIIb)
I. Let’s Study
Look at the pictures below. What can you say about the designs?

These are examples of

t-shirt

Printmaking is the process of creating artworks by printing, normally

on paper. Prints are created by transferring ink from a matrix to a sheet of
paper or other material, by a variety of techniques. Common types of
matrices include: metal plates, usually copper or zinc, or polymer plates
and other thicker plastic sheets for engraving or etching; stone,
aluminum, or polymer for lithography; blocks of wood
for woodcuts and wood engravings; and linoleum for linocuts. Screens
made of silk or synthetic fabrics are used for the screen printing process.1
Like the examples given above, which is also called, silkscreen printing.
Principles of Design and Harmony
Principles of design and harmony is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar or
related elements. Harmony in a painting or design helps bring about unity. All harmony and
no contrast, however, can become monotonous. A balance must be struck between areas of
harmony and areas of contrast.2
Notice that in the pictures above, the contrast of lines,
shapes, letters, and colors create harmony whether done by hand or
machine. Technology using the computer, and different printing
machines or what we call the digital printing, have made printing

1
easier and faster, even so, the design principles should produce
harmony like hand printing.
The creation of design, using computer program is easier. The
production is even made faster with the use of silkscreen printing machine.
This machine allows the printing of several colors on a T-shirt.
Inks used in silkscreen printing are available in different colors. You can start with
primary colors to secondary colors and then mix the primary colors to secondary colors to
create immediate colors.
+ =

(primary color) (primary color) (secondary color)

Creating new colors can be either fun or frustrating but will help widen your creativity and
imagination to be able to produce a quality print design. Be patient, organize and keep on
experimenting until you create the colors that you like.

II. Let’s Practice

Task 1: Write TRUE if the statement is correct about printmaking, and FALSE if the statement
is wrong. Write your answer on the line provided.

_______ 1. Silkscreen printing is one of the methods in printmaking.

_______ 2. Whether by hand or by machine, design principles still apply for any design.
_______ 3. Hundreds of t-shirts can be reproduced by printing using the machine.
_______ 4. Contrast of colors, shapes, and lines produces balance and harmony to printing.
_______ 5. Technology made the printing of original designs even slower than manual printing.
Task 2: Draw or paint a print design that you would like to have for your shirt. Consider the
principles of design that you learned in this activity sheet. Then, list down three principles of design
you used in your output and explain why you considered those principles. Do it on a piece of short
bond paper. Your output should look like the example below.

Name: __________
Grade/Section: _____ List down three
principles of design you
Draw or paint a used in your output and
design here. explain why you
considered those
principles.
