For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:


As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on

answering the exercises.

Let Us Learn

Before we start, I would like to know how far you know about the
Japanese Face and Korean Mask painting. Specifically, it seeks to achieve
the learning competencies, first shows the relationship of the
development of crafts in specific countries in East Asia according to
functionality, traditional specialized, expertise, and availability of
resources (e.g., pottery, weaving, jewelry,and basketry) A8PR-IIf-3,
and second is creates crafts that can be locally assembled with local
materials, guided by local traditional techniques (e.g., Gong-bi, Ikat,
etc.) A8PR-IIc-e-1

Hence, it is expected to you with the following:


1. Design mask by applying color that inspired with the application of
elements of arts.
2. Appreciate the relationship of the development of crafts in Korea and
Japan.

Let Us Study

❖ Mostly the arts and craft n East Asia do not use paper, silk and on wood.
Their highest form of arts is painting. This is why that face painting in
Japan and mask painting in Korea is very popular.

❖ Performers during their stage play in Japan and Korea mask and face
painting is their medium and the color and design says their role on it.

❖ Each performers has their own distinct of make up for them to identify
what are their roles in the play . In Kabuki makeup or kesho is already
in itself an interpretation of the actor’s own role through medium of the
facial features and it has two types the standard make up applied to
most actors and kumadori make up applied to villains and heroes.

❖ The very dramatic lines and shapes using colors represents like dark red
(passion or anger), dark blue (depression or sadness), pink (youth), light
green (calm), black (fear), purple (nobility).

❖ Korean Mask called tal or t’al, originated with religious meaning just the
mask of other countries which also have religious or artistic origins, they
used it in funeral services to help banished evil spirits and theater plays
dating back to the prehistoric age.

❖ The roles of colors in Korean Mask like bright and vibrant colors that
help established the age and race of the figure, half red and half white
the wearer has two fathers and dark faced mask the character was born
of an adulterous mother.

Korean Mask Painting :

Materials:
- Short size bond paper
- pencil
- water color/oil pastel/crayons
Directions:
1. Prepare the materials needed for the activity.
2. Trace the face posted below in your bond paper.
3. After tracing it, you may now start applying dark colors that
reflects your own ethnicity/tribe.
4. Make your work presentable.

Let Us Remember

1. Face Painting for theatrical performances are used in Peking Opera in


China and Kabuki in Japan, while mask painting is used in Korea.
2. The makeup and perfume worn throughout performances were highly
significant to the stories that were being told in the kabuki play.
3. The arts of China, Japan and Korea are closely similar to one another,
they all have paintings.
4. East Asian countries do not only paint on silk and on wood, another way
of expressing their painting is through face painting or mask painting.
5. Painting is indeed one of the highest forms of arts in East Asia.
6. In Korea, their history in masks is used in funeral services to help banish
evil spirits and theater plays dating back to the prehistoric age.
7. In Japan, Painting is an art domain of the upper classes and royalty but
later was also produced by the common people.
