Let Us Learn

Japanese masks are used traditionally in theater, festivals or rituals.

They are connected to folk myths and tails. Masks represent people, creatures,
devil, ghosts, and animals.
Some of the Japanese traditional masks are Gigaku, Bugaku, Gyodo,
Tengu, Kappa, Noh, Kyōgen, Shinto, Kagura, Kitsune, Hyottoko, Oni, Kabuki,
Samurai, Kendo and Animegao masks.
Kabuki is modern theater art form. Classical masks are replaced by
painted faces and make-up. This form uses all kind of techniques, like actors
attached to wires and “fly”, upward or downward moving part of sets and
revolving stage. Rice powder is used to create a white base for make-up. Make-
up is used to exaggerate and enhance facial lines. Purple lines represent
nobility. Green lines represent supernatural. Red lines represent passion,
hedonism, and other positive things. Blue or black lines represents jealousy,
villainy, and other negative things.
Meanwhile, Korean masks are grotesque and vividly colored to the point
that some may find them vulgar. The exaggerated eyes, nose and mouth seem
to have been attached to the mask in a haphazard manner. The nose is often
stumpy, the eyes slanted fiercely upward, and the mouth wide and heavily
crooked. Masks are painted in vivid primary colors, representing both the
individual personality and social class of the character as well as his or her
age and gender. The mask of an elderly character, for example, is black and
dark; that of a young character is red and bright; while that of a young female
character is white. In terms of personality, a red, darkly-colored mask
represents recklessness and aggressiveness; a yellow or lightly-colored mask
characterizes foolishness and incompetence; and a black or darkly-colored
mask exemplifies an anxious, socially marginalized character. To symbolize a
character's duplicity, masks are sometimes painted half red and half white.
Hence, it is expected to you with the following:

1. Identify the emotions and qualities being expressed by the colors

2. Evaluate the colors used in their artwork

Let Us Remember

Kabuki is a style of traditional Japanese theater that includes music, dance,

and drama. First performed by females, after 1629 only male actors could
take part in Kabuki, and they played both the male and female characters.
Kabuki characters are often drawn from Japanese folklore, and a major part
of the Kabuki performance is the dramatic makeup worn by the actors. This
makeup is applied heavily to create a brightly painted mask that uses colors
in symbolic ways to indicate the age, gender, and class of each character, as
well as their moods and personalities.
Korean Masks are called tal or t’al , originated with religious and artistic
meaning Korea has a rich history of masks. They use it in funeral services
to help banish evil spirits and theatre plays dating back to the prehistoric age
Masks were also used for shamanistic rites and were kept within temples
where they were honored with offerings. By the 12th century the masks
became part of elaborate dances & dramas.
