2. The first three terms in a sequence of numbers u1, u2, u3,. . . , are given below.

u1 = 23 – 2 = 6 = 1 × 2 × 3
u2 = 33 – 3 = 24 = 2 × 3 × 4
u3 = 43 – 4 = 60 = 3 × 4 × 5

(a) Write down the 5 line of the sequence. [1]
(b) Express 193 – 19 as a product of three consecutive numbers. [1]
(c) Find an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term, un, of the sequence as a product of
three consecutive numbers. [2]
[Total 4 marks]

3. Study the dotted and white tile pattern shown and answer the following questions.

(a) Copy and complete the table for the first five patterns in these sequences. [2]

Pattern No. (n) 1 2 3 4 5 ...

Dotted tiles 1 3 5 ...
White tiles 3 6 11 ...

(b) Find an expression for the nth term of the sequence of dotted tiles. [2]
(c) The nth term of white tiles can be written in the form An2 + Bn + C . Find the nth term,
hence find the values of A, B and C. [4]

A giant novelty pencil is made up of a cone, a cylinder and a hemisphere, as shown.

Where necessary give your answer in surd form or/and in terms of π.
(a) Find the exact volume of the pencil. [3]
(b) (i) Find the exact slant height of the cone. [2]
(ii) Hence find the exact surface area of the pencil [3]

6. Give your answer in its simplest form.
(a) The letters spelling the word BANANA are written on six tiles.
i) Find the probability that a tile chosen at random has the letter N on it. [1]
The six tiles are placed in a bag. Three tiles are chosen at random without replacement.
The first placed in
Position 1, the second in Position 2 and the third in Position 3.

Position 1 Position 2 Position 3

ii) Find the probability that the three tiles spell BAN. [2]
iii) The tiles are now replaced and the process is repeated. Find the probability that the
three tiles spell either ANN or ANA. [2]
(b) A bag contains six identical balls numbered-
2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7
A ball is taken from the bag at random. Find the probability that the number on the ball is -
i) a multiple of 3 [1]
ii) prime [1]
All the six balls are replaced in the bag. Two balls are taken from the bag, one after
another without replacement. And the number on the two balls are added together.
iii) Show all the possible outcomes by using possibility diagram. [1]
iv) Find the probability that the sum of the numbers is
(a) odd [1]
(b) less than 8 [1]
