Conditionals
• There are different types of conditionals, but each type consists of
two parts:

• If – clause and main clause

• In the If – clause, we state a hypothesis. In the main clause, we

state the result of the hypothesis. The If – clause can come first
or second. If the If – clause comes first, we put a ‘comma’
before the main clause.

• e.g. If you are late, you will miss the bus.

(hypothesis) (result)
• Type 1 conditionals express a real or very probable situation in the
present or future. Type 1 conditionals are formed as follows:

If – clause Main clause

If + Present Simple Present Simple
Future Simple
Imperative
can/must/may, etc. + infinitive

• e.g. Water turns into ice if the temperature falls below 0℃.
If Robert studies hard, he will pass his exams.
If you don’t understand, look at the example.
• Type 2 conditionals express an imaginary or improbable situation
which is unlikely to happen in the present or future. Type 2
conditionals are formed as follows:

If – clause Main clause

If + Past Simple would/could/might + infinitive

• e.g. If I had the time, I would do some exercise.

(I don’t have time, so I won’t do exercise.)

If I had a lot of money, I could buy a big house.

(I don’t have a lot of money. I can’t buy a big house.)
• In Type 2 conditionals, you can use ‘were’ instead of ‘was’ for all
persons.

• e.g. If Peter was/were here, he would tell us what to do.

 In conditionals, you can use ‘unless’ instead of ‘if …. not’ in the

if – clause. The verb is always in the affirmative form after unless.

 e.g. If you don’t hurry, we’ll be late for school.

Unless you hurry, we’ll be late for school.
(Unless you don’t hurry, we’ll be late for school.)
