My Dragon
By Elizabeth Steinglass ⋆ Art by Richard Watson

She doesn’t have wings.

She doesn’t eat kings.
She doesn’t belong to a wizard.

She doesn’t breathe fire

or roost on a spire.
My dragon’s a sweet bearded lizard.

Tex and Indi

Kitty Helpers By Lissa Rovetch Art by Amy Wummer

“I have a favor to ask,” said Arizona to Tex and Indi. “Would

you do my kitty chores while I’m at camp this week?”
“Sure,” said Tex. “I’ll feed Charlie and Cow and give them
lots of snuggles.”
“I’ll make sure they have water,” said Indi. “And I can play
with them a bunch.”

Tex and Indi and the kitties had an extra-busy week.
“Silly Cow!” laughed Tex. “You’re supposed to eat this
yummy food, not dig in the plants.”

“Good one,” Indi cheered, as Charlie proudly
pounced on his catnip ball. “Can you catch the
feather on the end of this string?”

“Thanks for being fantastic helpers!” said Arizona when
she got home. “I made these friendship bracelets for you.”
As she was tying one on Tex’s wrist, Cow knocked Indi’s
bracelet off the table. Then Charlie batted it across the floor.
“Silly kitties,” said Indi. “That’s not your toy.”
“Well, Arizona,” giggled Tex, “maybe next summer you
should make four bracelets instead of two!”

Our
Lemon
Tree By Laura Straut Art by Tjarda Borsboom

12 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2020

A lemon tree is growing in our yard. Its trunk
is strong and brown. Its leaves are shiny green.
We are careful around the lemon tree because
there are sharp thorns along its branches.

HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2020 13

In spring, the tree starts
to bloom. The flowers
are bright white. They
smell so sweet that many
insects and animals
come to the tree. Bees
and butterflies go from
flower to flower. They
spread pollen and help
the blooms become fruit.

Months go by. The

flowers are gone. Instead,
round green fruit dangles
from the branches.
The hardest part is being
patient and waiting for the
fruit to change from green
to bright sunny yellow.

14 HIGHLIGHTS HIGH FIVE JUNE 2020

Once the fruit is yellow, we pick it. Lemons are
tart, but we like to eat them. Our lips pucker, and we
laugh as we enjoy the sour treat. Our favorite thing
to do is to juice the lemons and make lemonade.
Thank you, tree!

One day, I was looking for a horse to ride into town.
I certainly couldn’t walk; it was a long way down.

So, I went to my neighbor who had horses on his farm.

And with a smile, he offered his fancy horse, Charm.

Charm was not like the other horses, quiet and plain.
She had big fluffy curls and glitter in her mane.

She nodded at me like it was time to start.

Charm clicked her tongue, and we were slowly on our way.
