INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Nowadays, electrical energy is one of the most commonly used forms of energy.

According to Rashid (2016), fossil fuels are one of the crucial electricity sources in the world

and have been a great benefit to society. These non-renewable fuels include coal, oil, and natural

gas and they supply about 80 percent of the Earth's energy. (C. Nunez, 2019). Fossil fuels burn

or with oxygen derived from air to provide heat. This heat may be employed directly, as in the

case of home furnaces, or used to produce steam to drive generators that can supply electricity.

(O.C. Kopp, 2020).

With the increasing population, the world faces many issues with electricity. The

predominant contributor to climate change is the combustion of fossil fuels by humans (A.A.

Walton, Ph.D.). In 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) discovered that

89% of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions come from fossil fuels and industry. In the

Philippines, Luzon is experiencing rotational blackouts as the power supply in the said country

continues to thin out, according to The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP).

Because of these reasons, people's work had been affected; specifically, the economy as

activities involving the use of power had been delayed and would result in the loss of revenues in

businesses.

On the other hand, reliance on a substantial amount of renewable energy can help address

these challenges. The Philippine Government has stated that it envisions the country being

1
energy self-sufficient, utilizing a combination of fossil fuels and renewable energy such as solar,

hydro, and wind energy.

The use of renewable energy has significant advantages over fossil electricity. Replacing

fossil fuels and expanding renewable energy sources will significantly reduce carbon dioxide

(CO2) emissions. Generating from most renewable energy sources makes them less sensitive to

rising fuel costs and has many environmental implications, including those associated with

greenhouse gas emissions and regulated air pollutant emissions. However, these energy sources

are based on weather conditions and possess an intermittent nature which hinders a stable power

supply. (Bhandari, 2014)

For this reason, the researchers thought of an alternative way to lessen the inadequacy of

electricity in the community. The researchers aim to produce a product that can help people to

create more renewable energy that can be available in most places, cost-efficient,

environmentally friendly, and attainable for most people. The Piezoelectric Generator will be a

great help to the power outage the economy is experiencing and can lessen and slow down the

emission of greenhouse gasses due to the burning of fossil fuels.

This project will require movement to generate electricity. The researchers will make use

of harvested kinetic energy as an electromechanical energy source. The tiles are designed to be

slightly displaced vertically when someone walks on them, which movement results in a rotatory

motion that generates electrical energy.

2
The Piezoelectric Generator requires movement to generate electricity through kinetic

energy. The tiles are designed to be slightly displaced vertically when someone walks on them,

which movement results in a rotatory motion that generates electrical energy.

Statement of the Problem

This study entitled the Piezoelectric Generator will be conducted to determine how this

machine can generate electricity through movement, most likely in the topic that the researchers

of this study have conducted and presented for consideration. Specifically, it will seek to answer

the following questions:

1. What is the maximum number of volts that can be generated from kinetic energy?

2. How does the Piezoelectric Generator be described in terms of:

a. appearance;

b. materials used;

c. cost and benefits analysis;

d. kinds of the tests performed;

e. acceptance by the public?

3. How does the Piezoelectric Generator make comparisons to commercial generators on the

market?

3
4. How does the Piezoelectric Generator work in terms of:

a. the maximum weight of a person that the machine can withstand;

b. compatibility on the application of the machine with regards to the source and

longevity for different appliances; and

c. sustainability of the product as an alternative power source

Hypothesis

The goal of this study is to see if the Piezoelectric Generator would be useful. This study

specifically investigated the following hypothesis, expressed in these ways:

Null Hypothesis

1. Piezoelectric Generator will not be favorable to the users.

2. Piezoelectric Generator is not effective in conserving electricity.

3. Piezoelectric Generator harms the environment more.

Alternative Hypothesis

1. Piezoelectric Generator will be favorable to the users.

2. Piezoelectric Generator is very effective in conserving electricity.

3. Piezoelectric Generator is environmentally friendly.

4
Scope and Limitations

The study entitled Piezoelectric Generator was conducted to formulate an environment-

friendly generator designed to be conventional for the growing population. This device is used in

generating renewable electricity without contributing to pollution. The Piezoelectric Generator is

designed to be placed in both indoor and outdoor locations and can produce energy through

human footsteps, depending on how often the people will walk on it. It was created to power

energy-efficient appliances that are good for everyday use as well as for emergency purposes.

The Piezoelectric Generator is made up of electrical components such as the dynamo, battery,

inverter, and wires that are not designed to get wet. Thus, the Piezoelectric Generator is not

water-resistant. There should be at least one full-charged battery to power up the motor.

The study includes in its scope those methods which are exclusively functioning in Brgy.

Sto. Tomas, Penaranda, Nueva Ecija but not overseas. It did not cover other problems that are

not considered as the electricity issues in the barangay. It focused on an alternative way of

producing renewable electricity and did not discuss other crises including water shortage,

improper waste management, and health crisis in the country.

Significance of the Study

5
The Piezoelectric Generator aims to help save energy by converting the energy of

footsteps into power. As a result, anytime you step on the tile, you generate clean, renewable

energy. These, in particular, can be beneficial to the following societal areas:

For the community, this assists them in conserving energy for the future. They are

educated and informed that there is a technique to save energy by harnessing the continual

walking forces of footsteps around the community. Also, it allows people to lower their expenses

on the electricity bill.

For the researchers, the findings of the study help to develop their cognitive and

affective domains in terms of conducting research. They can improve their skill, strategy, and

knowledge in engaging research. Through this, the researchers accumulate different activities

that mold how to find a solution to various issues.

For the environment, the project helps in producing renewable energy that decreases the

emission of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, which can lead to global warming and

climate change. In addition, this project helps preserve fossilized buried remains of plants and

animals and aims to recycle scrap metals.

For future researchers, they are inspired and encouraged to conduct a relevant and

meaningful study directed by this innovative project. They can enhance their skill and knowledge

which can be used for self-development and revenue-generating activities.

METHODOLOGY

6
The research design provides an appropriate framework for a study (K.J. Sileyew, 2019).
A very significant decision in the research design process is the choice to be made regarding its
approach while considering that it determines how relevant the information is in a study.
This research used both qualitative and quantitative methods and a combination of primary and
secondary sources to address its crucial objectives. The result obtained is triangulated since the
researchers utilized the qualitative and quantitative data types in the data analysis. The study
area, data sources, and sampling techniques will be discussed in this section.

Table 1 shows the materials, its quantity, and specification in producing the
Piezoelectric Generator.

Formation of the Device

After the planning, illustration of the project, and gathering of the materials, the
researchers decided to first create the base frame by attaching the dynamo, sprocket, and washer
into one piece. Then they cut the square bar and attached one end to the dynamo and the other

8
end to the metal base frame. Now, the round bar pipe tube is placed at the corner of the base
frame and one near the dynamo. Then the spring is welded outside the round bar pipe tube at the
corners.

After finishing the base frame, the researchers focused on the top frame by measuring the
distance between the sprocket and the round bar pipe tube in the middle of the base frame. Then,
they aligned the square bar in the center of the round bar pipe tube in the middle base frame and
glued the upper part of the spring to the top frame.

The researchers then began working on the box that will serve as the post outlet. After the
box was made, the inverter, wires, main switch, and the 3-gang outlet is placed in the box. The
box was then placed on the welded stand for the post outlet of the Piezoelectric Generator.

Final Assembly

The three Piezoelectric Generators were put and welded inside the frame. The electrical
wires were attached to the three dynamos and were connected to the battery. The batteries and
the wires were also connected to the inverter located in the post outlet. The outer frame was then
painted gray.

Testing of the Device

In order to know whether the device is effective, the researchers have tested the
Piezoelectric Generator with every effort to avoid failure of the study. These tests conducted by
the researchers were based on the statement of the problem.

Test 1. The total number of volts that the Piezoelectric Generator can generate was measured
using a voltmeter.

Test 2. Different appliances were tested to know the maximum number of

Piezoelectric Generator can support.

Test 3. The total capacity of the 2 batteries (12 Volts) was used to determine how long it would
take for them to run out.

Test 4. The maximum number of common devices plugged in at the same time using an
extension.

Test 5. The charging speed of different electrical appliances when plugged into the Piezoelectric
Generator.

9
Test 6. 20 people from different puroks were asked to use the Piezoelectric Generator and answer
a 10-item survey.

Final Product

The final product was the Piezoelectric Generator which can generate electricity by
converting kinetic energy into electric energy. Furthermore, the Piezoelectric Generator is
movable and can be used indoors and outdoors. However, the findings suggest that the
Piezoelectric Generator be placed outdoors where there is a larger population to reach its full
potential. Following the formulation of the study, observations and real testing methods were
utilized to avoid difficulties and temporary delays, as well as to respond quickly to them. These
could be used to compare an existing generator to a newly manufactured unit that has the same
wattage and serves the same purpose. These methods can test hypotheses and statements of the
problem related to the device's efficiency and affordability.

10
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This section organizes and provides the data collected from testing the efficiency of the
Piezoelectric Generator as an alternate source of electricity.

1. What is the maximum number of volts that can be generated from kinetic energy?

The maximum volts that the Piezoelectric Generator can generate is 12v since the
connection used is a parallel circuit. Furthermore, the batteries’ capacity limit is 12v which
indicates no matter how much current is generated by the Piezoelectric Generator, the maximum
amount of volts that the battery can store is 12V.

Mechanical energy is the energy possessed by an object because of its movement or

position. Mechanical energy can be kinetic energy (energy in motion) or potential energy (energy
stored in place). The total amount of mechanical energy is the sum of the potential energy and
the kinetic energy. This sum is simply referred to as the total mechanical energy (abbreviated as
TME).
Equation:
TME = PE + KE
Where:
TME = Total Mechanical Energy
PE = Potential Energy
KE = Kinetic Energy

To obtain the wattage, volts is multiplied in current. Wattage is the amount of work done
or the amount of electricity absorbed per unit of time. One watt equals one joule per second.
Wattage is calculated as the product of voltage and current. In order to find the wattage created
by the Piezoelectric Generator, the researchers used this equation:

Equation:
W = (V)(I)
Where:
W = Wattage
V = Voltage
I = Current

11
For example, to find how much voltage a 12V battery produces, the researchers
multiplied 12V to the 4 Ampere being produced by the Piezoelectric Generator. The solution is
shown below:
W = (V)(I)
W = (12V)(4A)
W = 48W

For a 11V battery multiplied to 4 Ampere, the answer is 44 Watts. The solution is shown
below:
W = (V)(I)
W = (11V) (4A)
W = 44W

22
3. How does the Piezoelectric Generator make comparisons to commercial generators

on the market?

A. Cost

The total cost of the Piezoelectric Generator is ₱7,713, while the average price of a 1500-

watt fuel-operated commercial generator ranges between ₱10,000 to ₱15,000. The Piezoelectric

Generator, on the other hand, does not require fuel to operate, whereas a 1500-watt fuel-operated

commercial generator does. The researchers observed that 3 liters of gasoline can only power a

fuel-powered generator for 1 hour, and 3 liters of gasoline is worth ₱210. Using a Piezoelectric

Generator for 6 hours was free, whereas running a 1500-watt fuel-powered commercial generator

for 6 hours cost ₱1,260.

B. Being eco-friendly

The Piezoelectric Generator operates on renewable energy and emits no contaminants

into the environment. A 1500-watt fuel-powered commercial generator is detrimental to the

environment since it uses fuel to function. What's more, the resources used by a commercial

generator are non-renewable, minimizing the input for a commercial generator. Furthermore, the

Piezoelectric Generator can be used at any time of year and is built with locally-sourced

recyclable materials.

23
C. Noise

Noise pollution impacts the world greatly. Oloruntoba EO et al. (2012, as cited in

Oguntunde P. et al. (2019), described noise pollution as the propagation of noise with a harmful

impact on the physiological and psychological lives of humans or animals. Ogutunde P. et al.

(2019) identify noise-emitting commercial generators as one of the sources of noise pollution

since it produces noise ranging from 70dB to 100dB. Long-term exposure to sound above 70dB

can cause hearing damage or permanent hearing loss. The Piezoelectric Generator is safe to use

since it only produces 8dB of noise.

D. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for preventing breakdowns and extending the life of

your generator. You will be able to keep your generator running smoothly for a much longer

period of time if you keep maintenance tasks up to date. The average cost of fuel-powered

commercial generator maintenance ranges between ₱4,000 and ₱8,000. The maintenance of the

Piezoelectric Generator, on the other hand, ranges from ₱300 to ₱1,000. The Piezoelectric

Generator does not require fuel and has low maintenance, whereas a fuel-powered commercial

generator requires fuel and has high maintenance costs. Furthermore, the Piezoelectric

Generator's components are both easy to find and inexpensive.

4. How does the Piezoelectric Generator work in terms of

a. The maximum weight of a person that the machine can withstand;

The heaviest person that used the Piezoelectric Generator is 85kg.

24
b. Compatibility on the application of the machine with regards to the source and longevity
for different appliances; and

The Piezoelectric Generator is compatible with flashlights, light bulbs, cellphones, power
banks, radios, walkie-talkies, and desk fans as long as the battery maintains 11V to 12V.

c. Sustainability of the product as an alternative power source?

The Piezoelectric Generator is suitable in terms of sustainability as an alternative power

source for:

1. It is environmentally friendly since it does not contribute to the carbon emissions in the
atmosphere.
2. It is more cost-efficient than other generators.
3. It is versatile in different places and weather conditions.

25
CONCLUSION

People are becoming dependent on power as the world's population grows at an alarming

rate. The need for electricity is likewise increasing, but the primary source of electricity, which is

non-renewable, cannot keep up. The researchers investigated the possibility of converting

walking energy into electricity. The Piezoelectric Generator's total wattage was measured, and

the results showed that it can generate electricity efficiently. It can serve as an alternate source of

electricity, particularly in times of need, and can also be utilized in different places. Future

researchers can apply this concept to manufacture and create power.

After the results were gathered, analyzed, and summarized, the researchers came up with

the following conclusions stated herein. The maximum number of volts that can be generated

from the total mechanical energy is 12V and it is enough to power 8 cellphones, 5 power banks,

3 radios, 5 flashlights, 4 walkie-talkies, and 1 desk fan, 1 bulb. The materials used are locally

sourced, recyclable, and affordable with a total sum of ₱7,713. Additionally, the Piezoelectric

Generator was tested by the public, and 90% of those surveyed preferred it over the fuel-powered

commercial generator.

Using a Piezoelectric Generator for hours is free. Henceforth, the resources used by a

commercial generator are non-renewable, minimizing the commercial generator’s input. In

addition, the Piezoelectric Generator is safe to use since it only produces 8dB of noise, does not

require fuel, and has low-cost maintenance. To sum up, this generator is advantageous, highly

efficient in terms of energy conservation, and environmentally friendly.

26
RECOMMENDATION

The usage of renewable energy resources to generate power from the Piezoelectric

Generator achieved favorable results. On this basis, the researchers suggest that this innovative

generator can be used to generate power in an emergency.

To further improve the study, the researchers also recommend the following:

1. To store more power, the battery's capacity to hold voltages should be increased.

2. To produce a bigger amount of voltage, the battery that serves as the starter should be

increased in voltage.

3. The Piezoelectric Generator should be installed in a busy area.

4. Instead of 12inchX12inch tile, increase its size to accommodate those with larger feet.

5. For a better suspension, the researchers propose to utilize a thicker but bouncy spring for

a durable and smoother glide.

6. The Piezoelectric Generator is built 9.5 inches or 24 centimeters in height, to attain an

easy installation, it is highly recommended to decrease the height of the generator.

Aside from kinetic energy, application research on free and renewable energy sources should be

pursued.
