Preparedness before thunderstorm and lightning
OBJECTIVES:
Discuss the thunderstorm and lightning.
At the end of this lesson, we will be able to learn what is thunderstorm and lightning and we
will able to know what we are going to do before the thunderstorm.

Thunderstorm is a type of weather system that contains lightning and thunder,

often with rain and hail. Thunder is the sound that follows a flash of lightning and is caused
by sudden expansion of the air in the path of the electrical discharge. Lightning is the flash of
light produced by a discharge of atmospheric electricity from one cloud to another or from a
cloud to the earth. An example of a thunderstorm is a storm that has bright flashes of light in
the sky from the lightning. Thunderstorm can bring heavy rains (which can cause flash
flooding), strong winds, hail, lightning, and tornadoes. Severe thunderstorm is a thunderstorm
that produces hail at least three quarters of an inch in diameter, has winds of 58 miles per
hour or higher, or produces a tornado. Severe thunderstorms can cause extensive damage to
homes and property. The thunderstorm can cause hailstones wherein it is a balls of ice caused
by water droplets caught in updrafts, freezing the water. Hailstones can cause damage to
vehicles and windows usually crops are affected. Every thunderstorm produces lightning,
which kills more people. Before a thunderstorm, undertake the following measures to protect
your property: keep trees and shrubs trimmed particularly tree limbs close to your house;
remove any debris or loose items in your yard, branches and may become missiles in strong
winds and install lightning rods. Before the thunderstorm the key to be safe is to prepare and
to have an emergency plan in place. Listen to local news weather reports for information on
changing weather conditions. Find out if you live in an area where thunderstorms commonly
occur and pay attention to weather warnings. Thunderstorms and lightning are connected to
each other.

weather system with lightning and thunder and lightning is a flash of light that cause of
thunder. Lightning and thunderstorm is a deadly but often avoidable hazard. You learned also
the some cause and effect of thunderstorm and lightning. Lightning and thunder can cause
strong winds, hail, lightning and tornadoes. There are some thunderstorm can cause hailstone

you and your family in case of this hazard. In this case we are not being able to panic because
we already know what we’re going to do in case of this emergency happen. Always prepared

RECOMMENDATION:

I recommend that every one of us should know the basic tips to avoid the thunderstorm
hazard. We should know the caution if the thunderstorm and lightning are happens. Prepare a
emergency kit; remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or
damage during a severe thunderstorm. It should have an emergency plan and follow the
measurements in protecting yourself and your family before the hazard happens. Before the
thunderstorm and lightning happens postpone outdoor activities if you feel that it happening
and remember the 30/30 lightning safety rule: Go indoors if after seeing lightning, you cannot
count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of
thunder. The entire barangay official should have the program to make their people know the
different caution before and during the thunderstorm and lightning. Also Local Government
Unit (LGU) should have the things to provide in case of emergency. Make sure that we
always prepared in case of the different emergency of hazard.
