If two numbers have a product of one, they are reciprocals of

each other.
Reciprocals of a number are called the multiplicative inverse.
To divide a fraction by a whole number, change the divisor to
a fraction form then multiply the reciprocal of the divisor.
To divide a whole number by a fraction, change the dividend
to a fraction then multiply the reciprocal of the divisor.
Use cancellation whenever possible. Express the answer in
simplest form.

How many boys were there? How many girls were there?

You can use the model approach to represent the

problem. It can help you visualize the given, and thus help
you better understand what is asked for and how to solve the
problem.

ILLUSTRATION

A. Block Model Method

5 units = 50 2 units = 2 x 10 = 20
1 unit = 50 ÷ 5 = 10 3 units = 3 x 10 = 30

Therefore, 20 boys and 30 girls attended the volleyballs summer training camp.
B. Abstract Approach
2
Equation: a. x 50 = No. of boys b. 50 – No. of boys = No. of girls
5

Solution:
2
x 5010 = 20 boys 50 – 20 = 30 girls

Your goal in this section is to apply your learning to real life situations.
You will be given practical task which will demonstrate your
understanding.

Engaging Scenario:
Assume the role of a registrar. You are tasked to show the total enrolment of
Canossa Academy this school year using a pie graph to be given by the teacher. This is
to make the community aware of the number of students per department. The pie or
circle graph will give a convenient representation of data expressed as parts of a whole.
The fractional part of the enrollees will be used.
Instructions:

1. Prepare a pie graph, showing the sectors (actual figures and fractional parts) that make up the

circle graph.

2. Answer the given problems based on the data shown in the graph.
