E15-Surface Modifications using Grinding Machining Process

Aim of the experiment:-

To investigate the influence of grinding process parameter (Speed, Feed, Depth of cut) on the

quality of the machined surface.

Introduction:-

Grinding is a cutting operation like any other material removal process in

comparatively smaller volume removal. The cutting tool used is an abrasive wheel having many

numbers of cutting edges. The machine on which grinding operation performed is called a grinding

machine. Grinding is done to obtain very high dimensional accuracy and better appearance.

The abrasive particles present on the surface of a grinding wheel will be acting as a single-point

cutting tool for removing the material from the workpiece. The cubical or rectangular shape of

the abrasive particles used in the grinding wheel will produce an approximate cross-section of the

chip as triangular. The grinding Process is one of the widely accepted finishing operations because

of its material removal capacity in a very small size of chips ranging from 0.25 to 0.5 mm.

Surface Grinding Machine:-

A surface Grinding Machine is a machine in which a grinding wheel is used as a cutting tool for

removing the material from the surface of the workpiece. It is also called an abrasive machining

process where abrasives are placed on the surface and corners of the grinding wheel so as to do

the finishing process with much more accuracy.

Each Abrasive particle acts as a single-point cutting tool whereas the grinding wheel, full of

abrasives called a multi-point cutting tool.

Apparatus:-

• Surface grinding machine,

• workpiece,
• surface roughness measuring machine

Experimental Procedure:-

1. Keep the work piece on the working table in required position with the help of magnetic chuck.

2. Down the cutting grinder to just touch the surface of work piece.

3. Then give the power supply.

4. Select the Speed feed and depth of cut from control panel of the machine.

5. .Perform the grinding experiment with varying parameters.

6. Measure the surface roughness of grounded sample with the help of surface profilometer for all

the parameters.

7. Plot and correlate the relationship between surface roughness, speed, feed and depth of cut.

Sample Caluclation:-

Surface roughness = (Ra1 +Ra2)/2 = (0.1655+0.1128)/2 = 0.13915 um
