What’s in an Additional Resources Pack?

Each topic of Writing features a PlanIt additional resources pack,
which has everything you need to teach a range of Writing skills
for that topic. Each pack contains different resources ideal for the
genre and year group concerned. This pack also includes a wide
range of display questions, genre posters and images to create an
eye-catching Writing display in your classroom.

Page 7
What’s in a PlanIt Topic Web
Each topic of Writing also features a PlanIt Topic Web, which has everything you
need to create links between Writing and other areas of the curriculum. This
topic web identifies the aims from subjects in the 2014 National Curriculum and
makes planning easier and more creative for teachers in your school.

What Is a PlanIt WriteIt Lesson?

PlanIt WriteIt lessons and resources have been devised to create an independent writing opportunity for children, with
minimal teacher input. The activity sheets are not differentiated because they have been created for writing assessment
purposes. Each PlanIt WriteIt pack is based on one of the genres covered in the topic. These packs are structured
to deliver lessons mirroring the learning that has already taken place, whilst providing assessment opportunities and
sometimes checklists for teachers.

English Guided Reading
This is our scheme of work for the 2014 National
Curriculum for Reading.
To help you save time, we have designed packs to meet the aims in
reading. They have been developed by our teachers and designed by
our creative team to provide you with everything you need to teach
high-quality guided reading in a twenty to thirty-minute time slot,
regardless of the style of guided reading used in your school.

Each text is covered by a series of guided reading packs and an

assessment pack. These include flexible activity plans, child-friendly
activity cards to aid independence, corresponding activity sheets that
progress in difficulty, vocabulary and key phrases word cards, and a
reading questions prompt sheet.

The National Curriculum aims in reading are covered through the

reading skills identified in each activity plan. The assessment pack also
gives further detail on how each guided reading pack addresses these.

The Learning Sequence
Each activity plan is aimed at a 20-30 minute time slot for your reading lesson needs. The plan describes the reading skill
focus for the lesson, what to read and suggested questions for developing this reading skill. This can be used in a small
teacher focus group or in a whole class setting as required.
Then there are six possible activities to build on or around the reading skill focus. These can be used in a carousel-style
lesson or as whole-class development activities as required.
All activity plans include a punctuation and grammar activity, a comprehension activity and a vocabulary activity, all
linked to the reading taking place in the lesson. Key stage 1 plans include a phonics activity in every plan.

Adult guidance provides teachers with background knowledge and information
to assist with the lesson. The type of guidance in the pack will depend on the
lesson content.

SPaG Assessment
In addition to the lesson plan, presentation and activity sheets, all Planit SPaG lesson packs will contain success criteria
grids for easy assessment. The Application and Assessment Activity provides a test for years two to six, whilst year
one packs include a quiz or game. Application activities add an opportunity for children to demonstrate their newly
acquired SPaG skills.

English Spelling
This is our scheme of work for the 2014 National
Curriculum for spelling. To help you save time we
have designed resources to cover all of the spelling
conventions, statutory spellings and many of the
common exception words that you need to visit
throughout Key Stages 1 and 2.
Our spelling packs have been developed by our teachers and
designed by our creative team to provide you with everything you
need to ensure breadth and coverage of all the National Curriculum
spelling requirements for each year group. The spelling packs also
make useful links to the word, sentence and punctuation objectives
from the National Curriculum 2014 English Appendix 2.
The Twinkl team have split the statutory requirements into half-
termly overviews with weekly lists of ten spelling words each linked
to one spelling rule. Each spelling convention is then covered by a
time-saving resource pack.
Wherever possible, the presentations and resources use the proper
terminology, e.g. phoneme, grapheme, digraph, trigraph, etc. It will
therefore be useful if children have experienced these terms when
they start these packs in Y1. We have included a useful PlanIt
Spelling Glossary for Teachers within the Year 1 packs.
Designed with flexibility in mind, the PlanIt spelling resources can
provide a full year’s worth of consecutive spelling lessons, or
alternatively could be used separately at any point in the year to
introduce or revise a specific spelling convention.
