ID No.____________________________ Name________________________________

Instructions

 Write your name and ID No. in the space provided.

 Darken the appropriate bubbles in the space provided above. No overwriting or cancelling allowed.
 For Section-I each question is of Two marks.
 For Section-II each question is of One mark.

Section-I
1) Calculate the least diameter of impeller of a centrifugal pump to just start delivering water to a height of
30 m, if the inside diameter of impeller is half of the outside diameter and the manometric efficiency is
0.8. The pump runs at 1000 r.p.m
0.2 m 1.5 m
0.6 m 2.0 m
2) An idealized centrifugal pump (blade outer radius of 50 mm) consumes 2 kW power while running at
3000 rpm. The entry of the liquid into the pump is axial and exit from the pump is radial with respect to
impeller. If the losses are neglected, then the mass flow rate of the liquid through the pump is:
15.6 kg/s 40.2 kg/s
90.6 kg/s 8.1 kg/s
3) When runner blade angle at inlet of a Francis turbine is 90o and the velocity of flow is constant, the
hydraulic efficiency in terms of vane angle (α) is
1  tan 2  2
 
1  tan 
2
2  tan 2 
1 1  tan 2 
 
1  tan 2  tan 2 
4) The blading of a single jet Pelton wheel runs at its optimum speed which is 0.46 times the jet speed.
The overall efficiency of the machine is 0.85. If d is jet diameter, D is wheel diameter and C v = 0.97.
The dimensionless specific speed is:
0.192d/D 0.363d/D
0.272d/D 0.526d/D
5) A test is conducted on a one-fifth scale model of a Francis turbine under a head of 2 m and volumetric
flow rate of 1 m3/s at 450 rpm. Take the water density and the acceleration due to gravity as 103 kg/m3
and 10 m/s2, respectively. Assume no losses both in model and prototype turbines. The power (in MW)
of a full sized turbine while working under a head of 30 m is:
49 62
82 29
Section-II
1) A model turbine diameter 380 mm develops 9 kW at a speed of 1500 rpm under a head of 7.6 m. A
geometrically similar turbine 1.9 m in diameter will operate at same efficiency under a head of 15 m.
What power would be expected?
434 kW 532 kW
623 kW 746 kW
2) A centrifugal pump running at 500 r.p.m and at its maximum efficiency is delivering a head of 30 m at
a flow rate 60 LPM. If speed is changed to 1000 r.p.m, the value of head and discharge will be:
H = 60, Q = 120 H = 120, Q = 120
H = 60, Q = 480 H = 120, Q = 30
3) A hydraulic turbine develops 1000 kW power for a head of 40m. If the head is reduced to 20m, the
power developed (in kW) is
177 500
354 707
4) At a hydroelectric power plant site, available head and flow rate are 24.5 m and 10.1 m3/s respectively.
If the turbine to be installed is required to run at 4 r.p.s with an overall efficiency of 90%, then suitable
type of turbine for this site is
Francis Kaplan
Pelton Propeller
5) Kaplan water turbine is commonly used when the flow through its runner is
axial and the head available is more than 100 m
 axial and the head available is less than 10 m
 radial and the head available is more than 100 m
 mixed and the head available is about 50 m
