Lesson Plan - Global Education

Grade: 6-8th
Unit Topic: Ratios and Unit Rate
Length of Time: 45 minutes

Materials and Technology

● Global Education directions sheet
● Access to Google Maps or Apple Maps
● iPads
● Pencil/pen
● Graph notebooks

Standards
● CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.B.5 - Graph proportional relationships, interpreting
the unit rate as the slope of the graph. Compare two different proportional
relationships represented in different ways. For example, compare a
distance-time graph to a distance-time equation to determine which of two
moving objects has greater speed.

Objectives
● The objective of this lesson will be for students to create tables and graphs
representing their speed in miles and hours from getting from one location on the
global map to another.

Modifications/Accommodations
● Speaking clearly
● Organized directions sheet
● Modeling the correct work
● Allowing for students to ask questions
● Sitting with struggling students to help guide their work in the right direction

Outline of Lesson
● Opening (5 minutes)
○ Hand out the Global Education directions sheet
○ Provide instructions for the activity
○ Allow students to grab all of the necessary materials that have been
outlined in the instructions
○ Model the appropriate steps to filling out the first portion of the worksheet
● Body (30 minutes)
○ Have students choose two location from different countries on the global
map
○ Once students have chosen their two locations, they will measure the
distance using Google or Apple Maps
○ After they have measured the distance between the two locations, they
will measure the amount of time a normal flight takes between the two
locations
○ Then, students will use their mathematical skills and reasoning to create
equations to solve for the speed the plane would be flying (on average)
from one of their locations to the other location
○ Students will repeat these steps for a few different examples of distance
and time between two locations from different countries
○ Ask students to share their responses with a partner
○ Lastly, if some students finished the activity early, they were allowed to
create a story with time constraints that would show their ability to make
sense of distances and times between various locations, and how
traveling between them can be challenging with time constraints
○ Teacher will summarize results and explain how to properly show your
work, explain your reasoning, and justify your connections and
comparisons
○ For the struggling students, teacher will model how to properly show your
work and explain your reasoning
● Closing (10 minutes)
○ Ask students to share the connections they have made with their
classmates as a whole class
○ Monitor the students’ discussions on the equations, tables, and graphs
they made
○ Interject with questions to further the discussion
○ Have students summarize their thoughts on the activity, including the parts
they enjoyed, struggled with, or felt confident in

Assessment
● Observations: Teacher will observe students’ thinking, use of mathematical
strategies, sharing, and explanations throughout the whole class discussions and
independent work
● Think-Pair-Share: Teacher will monitor students’ discussions on the connections
and comparisons they made between different speeds due to their distances and
times
● Global Education sheet: Teacher will analyze students’ abilities to follow the
instructions, adhere to the discussion expectations, and complete their
mathematical tables and graphs
