A veneer is a thin sheet of material placed on the front surface of the tooth, used for aesthetic
purposes and protection. When multiple thin layers of wafer thin shells are placed it is called
laminate veneer. Technology has allowed the fabrication of advanced qualities of porcelain
veneer which are ultra thin and offer superior aesthetics, greater life span and maximum
strength. They have been made from various materials like ceramic, porcelain, composite resin,
micro-filled composite resin, etc. Veneers can be direct or indirect depending on the method of
production or the coverage.
Indications:
· Localized and generalized defects
· Intrinsic discolouration
· Diastema
· Chipped tooth
· Worn dentition
· Malaligned teeth
· Excessively discoloured teeth
· Pypocalcification
· Peg laterals
Tooth preparation for veneers:
There are four different main designs:
Window preparation: The incisal edge of the tooth is preserved
Feather preparation: incisal edge of the tooth is prepared bucco-palatable, but
the length is not reduced
Bevel Preparation: the incisal edge of the tooth is prepared bucco-palatable, and
the length of the incisal edge is reduced 0.5-1 mm.
Incisal Overlap Preparation: the incisal edge of the tooth is prepared bucco-
palatable, and the length is reduced (about 2 mm), so the veneer is extended to
the palatal aspect of the tooth
They are bio-compatible, strong, durable, stain resistant, show longetivity, little recovery time,
good clinical performance and are minimally invasive compared to crowns.
