Title: VISIT REPORT (BLESSED DAIRY GICUMBI)

On 22th July 2022, we visited a factory called Blessed Dairy GICUMBI, and Maliyamungu (manager of
Blessed Dairy Gicumbi) explained what they do in it. In Dairy processing,

Post-harvest technology is the application of scientific and engineering principles to the handling,
storage, packaging, distribution, and sale of agricultural produce after it has been harvested. Post-
harvest technology is used to improve the quality and extend the shelf life of food.

Rubilizi Station is created by the law established the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources
Development Board (RAB) – it was established by LAW N°14/2017 OF 14/04/2017. The law specifies
that: RAB’s Station has the general mission of championing the agriculture sector development into a
knowledge based; technology driven and market oriented industry, using modern methods in crop,
animal, fisheries, forestry and soil and water management in food, fibre and fuel wood production and
processing. But the specific mandate for station of RAB enabling it to carry out research, agricultural or
animal resources extension at the level of farmers and which has the powers to manage both the staff
and the property located in that zone;For agriculture component, Rubilizi station has a land for research
and seed multiplication.
 Firstly, we went in GORILLA FEEDS where they use to receive different kinds of products for
postharvest handling. Both in GORILLA FEEDS and in RUBILIZI RAB station they handle and
store the produce from different areas so as anyone who needs good quality products and
any related animal feeds can get there. We started by knowing where the produce can
started to be damaged from, and where its ended, we have seen that products damaged
between production or after harvesting until it reaches the consumption. The key steps
where produce can get damage are: at production level, after harvesting, transportation,
processing, packaging, storage, marketing and consumption.

GORILLA FEED

Animal feed is food given to domestic animals, especially livestock, in the course of animal husbandry.
There are two basic types: fodder and forage.Animal well being is highly dependent on feed that reflects
a well balanced nutrition. Some modern agricultural practices, such as fattening cows on grains or in
feed lots, have detrimental effects on the environment and animals. For example, increased corn or
other grain in feed for cows, makes their microbiomes more acidic weakening their immune systems
and making cows a more likely vector for E.coli.

Gorilla Feed Co. Ltd is a local company that specializes in production and distribution of high quality
animal feeds for cows, pigs, chickens and fish imports. the company has the capacity to produce four
tones of quality feeds per hour and is committed to sell them at affordable prices to vendors, individual
farmers as well as cooperatives.
The chicken feeds are produced in two main types for different growth stages: Chick starter and
Growers mash feed. Layers are also feed according to their age, from day 120 onwards. So, Gorilla feed
company produce and package grain animal feed, which will help to alleviate the burden of many
farmers who face shortage of and high price of animal feed.

5. CONCLUSION.

Postharvest handling technology is very important int helps the conservation, treatment and store our
product to remain as good quality for consumption. And it overcome hunger among people. Best
